ICSI risks?!

Last week my partner and I completed our first egg collection. Everything went well on my side; I was elated with my 20 eggs šŸ’Ŗ but the embryologist decided on the day to do ICSI instead of IVF due to my partners sperm. 7 fertilised the next day and they're now in the freezer until we're ready to transfer next month.

Since the egg collection, I have been researching ICSI and I'm slightly concerned about the risks/research... increased chance of miscarriage, egg damage, learning difficulties, inheriting male infertility etc!

Very open to people's thoughts on this... am I worrying too much or is it a genuine risk?

We had icsi too and have a healthy baby from it. I think the risks of congenital abnormalities is still very very small.

Our consultant said that some clinics abroad do icsi for all ivf rather than just for mfi so it canā€™t be that dangerous.

Big breaths and best of luck for your transfer!

we had ICSI and have a healthy baby boy. We had ICSI as we were using frozen sperm itā€™s itā€™s common practice for clinic to do that for frozen. We got 6 embryos from 10 mature and 7 fertilised (which is good) I didnā€™t even know they had did it until I went back to try for a sibling and they said ā€˜I see you had ICSI last timeā€™ and we have had about a million risks laid out for us at every stage on this journey so many times about so many parts of treatment and having had ICSI 6 times now Iā€™ve never once saw any of these risks you mention and never had to sign anything to say I understand these risks so they must not be actually statistically or clinically significant enough for the clinic to consider them risks at all so I wouldnā€™t worry whatsoever! Absolutely amazing that you have 7 embryos frozen šŸ¤— superb chances there of your little miracle xx

Thank you, thatā€™s reassuring. 7 frozen on day 1 so Iā€™m expecting the number to decrease but letā€™s see x

Congrats on 7 in the freezer! We had the opposite, always planned for ICSI but on the day husbands sperm analysis was okay so they wanted to do IVF. I had reservations as they had always said ICSI was needed. So they split the 12 eggs, 6 ICSI 6 IVF. 2 eggs were not mature. But we got 3 blasts from ICSI and only 1 from IVF which was graded the lowest (although I don't always think grading means everything) if you had IVF you might not have had the 7 you have now. I have a baby boy from our ICSI blast and he's developing amazingly. Good luck with your transfer! X
