Bleed after failed cycle

We had our first IVF cycle which unfortunately was unsuccessful. I was spotting for a few days before our tests which were both negative but have been bleeding for 6 days now, and I feel it’s getting heavier than lighter. My normal bleeds are 3-4 days max and I’m done, I am assuming lining is thicker from the cycle etc, how many days have others bled for after failed cycles?

It’s so hard to deal with the cycle loss, but this whopper bleed is just a constant reminder of the failure. This process just sucks.

I'm sorry it didn't work this time. The process is really hard. Do you have any frosties from this round or will you have to look at doing another one? On the bleeding before test day, we're you on progesterone support and did they test your levels? I had this happen on one cycle which gradually got heavier (i.e., not implantation bleeding, even though it was a BFP, it never really developed) and my consultant said you should get spotting or bleeding I'd the progesterone is working properly, so we changed form and amount for the FET straight after and that took immediately and was successful. There can be a million factors, but just one to rule out or discuss at your debrief. Also the withdrawal bleeds can vary - sometimes heavier and longer, sometimes lighter and shorter, just keep an eye on it and maybe tell your clinic if it gets very heavy or it's not getting lighter after more than a week.

We don’t have anything left over from the cycle, we had 4 mature eggs of which 1 fertilised and that was transferred at day 3. We will be going for full cycle again.

I had very mild spotting from day 8 after transfer which i hoped was implantation bleeding. My clinic doesn’t do any progesterone testing, or they didnt on this cycle. It was an NHS funded, cycle don’t know if that means they do less testing?

Yes I was on progesterone from egg collection until we had our tests, cyclogest 400mg twice daily.

Ah OK, well if it helps in any way the first round is often a bit of an experiment (albeit a potentially expensive and exhausting one!) and hopefully your clinic can give you a full debrief and make any changes needed for the next one. NHS clinics can be more reluctant to test progesterone but I would definitely ask about this given the spotting and if they won't do it, your GP might or try private (walk-in clinics or an online company). I was on cyclogest 400mg x2 at a private clinic when I got the spotting and they changed to utrogestan and lubion injections for the FET that worked. My NHS clinic who I went back to most recently (paying this time) to try for a sibling were willing to change the form of progesterone to that too, so they can sometimes make those sorts of changes if you push it.

Could the spotting have been a sign of insufficient progesterone?

Yes, that's what my consultant thought it was when it happened to me - it didn't happen again once we got the progesterone right, even on a BFN. It can be other things and spotting and bleeding are quite common with early pregnancy, and the IVF process and meds too. So it's worth asking and getting it checked as if your levels are fine at least you know it's probably not that.

I’m sorry about your cycle. I just had something similar, I started spotting brown, then got a positive test, after my positive test I started bleeding red.

I started chasing the ACU, since I’m NHS funded, after a lot of chasing they made 1 blood test which had high HCG and low progesterone. They increased my cyclogest and booked the 8 weeks scan.

I chased again this week since I’ve been bleeding for over 10 days now. Finally was seen by a doctor yesterday and they confirmed a miscarriage. They did an early scan and found nothing and the HCG had dropped.

I’m still bleeding, since Feb 3 now, but the doctor said it should stop in a few days. I hope this extended period is because of the hormones.
