When to get viability scan

Hi everyone, at which week of pregnancy did you see the gestational sac and heartbeats?

I understand a natural pregnancy and fresh transfer and Day 3/Day 5 FET all differ in calculating your weeks, so if you would state how you got pregnant, that would help!

I hear 6 weeks is enough or some people say 8 weeks - I'd like to do one privately before the 12-week scan by NHS, but just once so we just pay only once, just want to know the best-ish timing to get it.

By 7 weeks you should see everything you need to. Before that things can sometimes be a bit ambiguous. I would never have a scan before 7 weeks again as I got false hope on my first pregnancy that everything was OK when it wasn't. All 3 first scans I had were after 5 day fresh transfers.

I was dated at 6wks 5days when I had my viability scan - most private companies offering scans state 7wks +. Wish you well x

I strongly recommend not going earlier than 7 weeks. I was told at my 6 week scan that it isn't unusual for viability to be unclear at that stage. I had no visible pole. Mine was a missed miscarriage, and the early scan just prolonged the agony. While waiting a whole week can feel a long time, you may be better off in the end with a clearer result.

My viability scan for the FET with a day 5 embryo was at 6+4 measuring 6+2 with a sac/pole/heartbeat, but I've heard many stories of inconclusive scans at 6 weeks, having to go back for another scan a week ~ 10 days later. So as others have said I'd recommend to wait at least until after 7 weeks. Wishing you all the best xxx

Suggest 7 weeks also if you only want one. On my successful 5 day FET I had one at 5+2 and saw a heartbeat but that was a very early implanter and I'd been having HCGs done so knew it was high and probably enough to see something. On a natural pregnancy I had one at what should have been 6+3 and they could only see a gestational sac and a yolk sac and said I had to come back in two weeks. I'd had a PUL previously and I wanted to know as early as possible that this one was at least in the right place and something was happening so it did reassure me of that, but it also made the wait pretty stressful and it probably would have been better to wait until 7 weeks. So unless you're having HCGs and they're not going in the right direction (or on the other hand they'r very high and consistent), or you're having spotting or other symptoms that are worrying you, 7 weeks or later is probably better - you should also see a bit more and hopefully a heartbeat rather than just see an unclear blob or two which may be all you get earlier.

I refused to have a scan before 7wks as I knew depending on when implantation happens (not an exact science in IVF or natural pregnancy) you need to give it u til then to make sure everything is in the right place and heartbeat can be seen. Good luck.xx

Hi, a viability scan is included with my package. I've had a day 5 fet and if positive the clinic schedule viability scan at 7 weeks 🙂

Hi all, I’m interested in this too and sorry for the silly question but when do you count the weeks from? Would it be from the date of your transfer or the date of a positive test? Maybe neither of those 🤷🏻‍♀️ Thanks! x

This calculator will give you the weeks&days for IVF pregnancies😉

Thank you! I had used one of those calculators before but was a bit confused by it saying 4 weeks when I for sure wasn’t pregnant 4 weeks ago! 😂 anyway, thanks again x

It is confusing, it depends on how you got pregnant. Mine is +5 days for 5 day embryo (conceived 5 days before the transfer day) on top of 2 weeks 0 days, so the pregnancy started 2 weeks 5 days before the FET.

Belated thanks to everybody for sharing! I had a scan at the local NHS Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit for bleeding concerns during TWW - so I didn't have to pay, but it had to be as soon as I hit 6 wks. We could see everything, from the gestational sac, yolk sac, the baby and its heartbeat:)
