The most embarrassing thing I’ve ever written. IVF side effect. Not content for young eyes!!! Would you tell your Dr this??

I am wondering if I am alone on this one as I imagine not many people would admit this. I know I’m cringing! I think I need to bring this up to my dr because I really do want ivf to work. After my first ivf transfer I had a sex dream where I orgasmed intensely, anyway I woke in the night feeling like this had happened (confused because I rarely have dreams like this, let alone ones with a seemingly physical response) moments later my womb went into what I can only describe as full contraction and I had this intense pain and urge to go to the bathroom to empty my bowels. Which I did and then was fine. The transfer failed and I felt like this was when my body rejected it but obviously I cannot know that. I am currently on Syranel and this week had an orgasm (whilst awake!) and my womb did the same thing as what happened after my transfer in the middle of the night. I was in agony and I thought I was going to throw up. It made me wretch and this went on for several minutes and then I was totally fine. So what I am wondering is what the hell is that about?! I didn’t really think I could have dream orgasmed until this second incident occurred. I did google and read that this can happen to menopausal women when estrogen is low and I am downregulating at the moment but I am now thinking should I be avoiding orgasms? Is something too far off? Has anyone had this or am I super unusual? 😬

Thanks. It’s so weird but my partner was like “we should bring this up”. So I guess I will bring this up at my next scan 🥴

Hi Here4ivfinfo, I think someone else posted about a very similar thing not long ago - maybe try searching for the post. I seem to remember everyone saying it was totally normal and not a problem, although definitely worth asking at your next appointment just to put your mind at rest!

Thanks for replying. I will ask the dr at my next appointment but I already feel better about this and less of a weirdo! I will also search for that post Xxxx

hiya. Honestly fertility meds do some weird things. I had orgasms in my sleep when I was doing ivf I remember waking up thinking wtf was that all about I’ve had a number of rounds and it has happened a few times. If you are worried I would mention it but I honestly think it’s hormone related xxx

Thank you so much for putting my mind at ease. I had no idea this was a thing!! X

This got asked at least a couple of times recently so you are not alone to be worrying about this - have a search of those questions as the responses should really reassure you. If it's not normal for you it probably the meds which cause all sorts of hormonal reactions even at low doses so given the whacking great doses we're on for IVF it's not surprising. I always got way more organsms on the lead up and during my period but they could also be quite painful as the whole area is tender and there's more blood flow, plus cramps. It's perfectly normal too when you're pregnant to get aroused a lot more easily and have more organsms (including in your sleep) and they can be very intense, sometimes ending in quite uncomfortable waves which go on for a while after - again to do with the hormones but also the increased blood flow to the area. IVF is probably similar in terms of effects, especially the rise in oestrogen and progesterone. And one of the points of orgasms and the intense contractions is to help the sperm up and along its way to the womb, plus I think it's also meant to temporarily further increase blood flow and oxygen to the whole area, which would be a good thing. By all means ask your doctor (I'm sure they will have been asked similar) but it sounds like it's a hormonal reaction and then your body's just really sensitive and tender at the moment, so it feels like an extreme reaction.

Thanks so much for taking the time to respond. You’ve made me feel such a wave of relief. I will bring it up with the dr just to be super sure but I am feeling more hopeful now and less scared about expelling a blastocyst mid sleep lol. I’ll look for the other posts too 🙌🏻 xxxx

We avoid min 10 days after the transfers. We couldn't conceive yet, but didn't have such complications either.

Hello it’s the hormones! I’ve gone through IVF 3 times and definitely the hormones. I do have a little boy from IVF and through out my pregnancy I had them aswell it’s quite normal . Don’t feel embarrassed 😊 x ( they didn’t hurt the embryos)

this is so normal in IVF and I thought the exact same things as you that this was when embryo was rejected BUT it then happened on the one that worked and when trying for a sibling ones that have implanted (and lost later) as well as ones that didn’t so I don’t think it actually is correlated at all so I’m more relaxed about it now. I have no idea why it’s so painful for you though I am defo more tender but not painful to feel sick but ot defo sounds like the meds are doing this and your theory about the strong replacement for down reg completely makes sense to me! I would defo avoid during 2 WW but don’t worry if it happens in a dream then as it’s so common from the meds and people probs don’t even realise sometimes !

Thanks so much for taking the time to respond to this and putting my mind at ease. It’s so hard not to read into things x

Intense pain I would guess it is due to endometriosis. That kind of contraction pain can also be caused by a build up of prostaglandins. Did you have your progesterone tested on that cycle? I would perhaps request injectable progesterone in addition for future cycles (progesterone inhibits prostaglandins). Endometirosis can make you progesterone resistant so we need more xx

Hey, I did get my progesterone tested but it was shortly after accidentally taking a double dose. So it would be higher and I have wondered about that especially as I spotted 6 days post transfer too (Or there abouts). I’ve never experienced any symptoms of endometriosis so I am hoping it’s not that but I have heard that can cause agonising cramps. Thanks for your answer xxxx
