feeling disappointed 😢

Following my first IVF cycle, I was told yesterday that I have no embryos to transfer. Two immature eggs collected. One became mature in the lab and they were able to inject sperm into it, but it fertilised abnormally!

I feel so disappointed in myself and my body and finding it difficult to pick myself up. Where do I go from here?

unfortunately first cycles are not always successful, hopefully round two will be better tuned for your needs specifically. Sending love x

Thank you for your kind words and love! I have a follow-up meeting with my consultant next week, so hopefully I will try and take something positive from it, although I’m finding it hard to feel hopeful x

just wanted to wish you the best! Please don’t be down on yourself. I’ve learned that IVF is a science where everything has to line up perfectly. We are on IVF #5! Ask questions to your doctors and trust your gut. Hang in there! And it’s very true, the 1st cycle is sort of like a baseline. I’m sure they will change your protocol. Keep taking your supplements? And hang in there! Wishing you the best!!!

Thankyou for your wishes! Your advice is helpful and I will keep it in mind. Hearing other people’s experiences is helping a little.

Wish you the best of luck through this cycle too x

I had this happen after my 4th collection, so I totally understand where you’re coming from. You get so geared up for it all and expect transfer to be the next step, that when it doesn’t happen you feel like a carpet has been ripped out from beneath you. That being said, because this is your first cycle, your clinic should be able to learn from it and there will be things that can change to aim for a better outcome next time. Definitely ask your dr what can be done differently if you want to continue and best of luck xx

Thankyou for you reply! That’s the exact feeling I got that you describe ! I was ready for the next step of transfer in the cycle but we never got to that stage and felt it was cut short! I felt so gutted! Im hoping when I get to speak to my consultant we can change something up, what I’m dreading is that they say ‘this is IVF’ and can happen every cycle!

You are definitely allowed to feel cheated! It’s a horrible feeling, but it’s by no means cut and dried for you. Everyone’s first cycle is experimental to some degree. Of course some people will walk away with a baby on their first go, but the vast majority won’t. IVF is far from a one size fits all approach. Sometimes it’s medication, sometimes is just bad luck, but you’re still in with a shot 😊 x

This also happened to me on my first cycle, they retrieved 3 but none fertilised (through ICSI). Was devastated to not even get to the next step. Just wasn’t expecting it to all stop at that point. The second cycle they made changes to my medication, this resulted in more eggs, more embryos and some to freeze. After my second FET we had success and I currently have a healthy 10 month old. Hope this gives you hope that just because it doesn’t work on the first time, it doesn’t mean it will never. Sending love, be kind to yourself.

Thankyou! You also mention exactly how I was feeling, in terms of it’s not worked the first time, so its never going to work, that kind of thinking is making me feel really down on myself, but sharing your story gives me hope! - so, Thank-you!

Congratulations on your beautiful 10 month old x

Really sorry to hear you didn't get any embryos from your first cycle - I had the same experience and it was really heartbreaking. It feels like you are falling at the first hurdle in a way. They made lots of changes to my second cycle (I was put on the short IVF protocol instead of the long protocol) and increased my medication so it's definitely worth exploring all the options with your consultant for what they could do differently next time depending on what your infertility causes are. My second cycle we froze two embryos after ICSI so it was a much more positive result. Also taking time out to let myself recover was really vital for me. Wishing you all the best with next steps.

Thanks for sharing your story. I haven’t found a cause for infertility and had all the tests done. I have low AMH and a slightly low antral follicle count. My husband has low concentration with low motility. So we also opted for ICSI.

I was on the short protocol and had stimulation for 11 days and the trigger shot with egg collection 36 hours later. 2 eggs with no fertilisation, so no embryos, and end of cycle 😭

As you say falling at the first hurdle is heartbreaking 💔 But I’m hoping we can change something for the next cycle 🤞
