I have just found out that I'm pregnant, we have been trying for almost a year so we are over the moon. I have informed my GP practice and they have booked me in for my first midwife appointment in 4 weeks time. I was a bit surprised as they didn't ask to confirm the pregnancy or do a pregnancy blood test - is this the usual practice? Or is this something they will do at the first midwife appointment?
I'm quite anxious and keep feeling the need to test to make sure I'm still pregnant. After 12 months of late periods and negative tests it all feels to good to be true!

Hi! I would ask for a blood test to confirm it for your own piece of mind, I've had my pregnancy confirmed by my ivf clinic, you should see your gp and ask for blood test
It's common practice not to have pregnancy confirmed by a GP. I didn't have a blood test after fertility treatment. I remember a friend went to her GP after finding out she was pregnant and the GP told her they don't do any additional tests because the pregnancy tests they would use are no more accurate than OTC ones. Saying that, there's no harm in asking. Good luck and congratulations!
Thank you so much everyone for confirming. After trawling the NHS website I couldn't seem to find the answer to this question and was worried that some sort of professional should have confirmed the pregnancy but now I see that's not the case. I've just booked an early scan (6 weeks 5 days) to confirm viability (have this fear of ectopic and I don't know why) so hopefully this will be good news and give some much needed peace of mind 🙏
Hi just wanted to know how you are doing. Having blood tests to confirm pregnancy is the usual practice. But if they prefer an early scan I guess that works too, Can you give us an update?
Hiya, of course! Had my early scan, all was well and we saw the heartbeat. I'm now 8 wks 2 days and had my first midwife appointment yesterday. I had blood tests but not sure if they confirm pregnancy or not - mainly for iron levels and diseases etc. Thank you for asking 😊
