IVF round 1 - 20 eggs collected, 0 fertilised

We had our first round of IVF earlier this year and discovered i had PCOS during treatment. 20 eggs were collected, 3 were mature with a further 3 maturing over night however, unfortunately none fertilised.

We are due to start our next round of IVF with ICSI in the next couple of weeks. To have 0 fertilise from 20 eggs was a massive shock so i'm feeling a little bit nervous about the next round.

Just wondered if anyone has had a similar experience?

I’m so sorry for what you’re going through. We had zero fertilisation in our first round (from 11 eggs) and it was so devastating. We did ICSI in our next round and had 3 x 5 day embryos - our third transfer is now my 2.5yr old daughter. Hope you are able to take some time to rest and recover and all the very best for your next cycle xx

hi Gemma, so sorry to hear this, I know what this feels like, and it’s such hard news to process. We got 13 eggs and zero fertilised with ICSI, just preparing for round 3 now. I don’t have a success story for you, but I do know every round is different,

Are they putting you on the same protocol? Wishing you lots of luck x

We’ve got an ICSI conversion chat on Thursday so hopefully will find out more about the protocol for round 2 then.

Good luck with your round 3 🤞🏼 Xx

also had zero fertilisation on round 1 from 8 eggs - I changed drugs and got better success round 2 and 3 for egg collections. Still don’t have success yet but got a better fertilisation rate.

Hi 🤗 I’m so sorry I can understand why you are nervous for next round and hopefully ICSI will help with the fertilisation but actually I would be more focused on why 17 of the eggs collected weren’t actually mature and what they can do to your protocol etc to try for more mature? Perhaps you need stims for a day or 2 extra or different type of stims or protocol? 0 fertilised from 3 Mature could just be the luck of that round and might be different outcome with ICSI but the more mature eggs you can get the better is my clinics view 💜 hopefully the wh can give you some answers and suggestions for next time xxx

Hi! I am really sorry that no eggs fertilised. I have PCOS too but we went for ICSI from the start due to male factor and that gave us 75% fertilisation rate for the mature eggs. I recommend doing some reading on PCOS if you haven't already - there is a lot you can do to help egg quality. I took Inositol and Ubiquinol, in addition to Proxceed. The book 'It all starts with the egg' has some really helpful dietary and lifestyle advice too. Very best of luck with the next round! Don't give up!

Thankyou - I’ve been doing a bit of research and have been listening to the PCOS nutritionist podcast which has really helped me make dietary changes which I’m hoping will have helped 🤞🏼 I’ll give the book a go! X

hi, so sorry you experienced this we also had zero fertilisations on our first round (10 eggs but only 6 mature) so I know how difficult it is to receive that news. On our second round I made a few changes such as slightly higher dose of stims and I pushed the clinic to allow us to have a double dose of the trigger shot increased from 500 to 1000 as I had read this can help with maturing of the eggs. I also started taking ubiquinol supplement before the next round and we switched to icsi. On this round we got slightly less eggs 7 but all fertilised with Icsi and we got 5 x day 5 embroyos so much better outcome I’m not sure which change made the difference or if they all helped. The first transfer didn’t work for us, the second ended in a chemical but the third one has resulted in our little boy. I wish you all the luck in the world for your next round and really hope Icsi helps with the fertilisation for you but as others have said looking into ways to help mature the eggs should also help with fertilisation as only mature eggs will fertilise.

feel free to message me if you have any questions

Take care xxx

Thankyou that’s really helpful. I think as I have PCOS they will be reluctant to increase the dosage as I was borderline going into OHSS last time but will definitely raise the question with them and also push for the double trigger shot. X

I’m so sorry to read this, I’ve been in the exact same position. Please have a look at my bio and happy to pm with you. I’ve since had success and read everything under the sun on this. Don’t lose hope, there’s lots more that can be done 💜

having a look at your bio I see you had PIEZO-ICSI. Can I ask which clinic you were with?

That might explain it as I’ve not heard of this here in the UK

Hi,I'm so sorry to hear this and I hope you are OK. My first round I had 19 eggs collected and a lot were mature (can't remember how many as I've had so many rounds). I'd agreed to have ICSI before the collection, but the clinic decided not to given the number of eggs and only 1 fertilised. I was gutted.

My next round I had 25 eggs collected, used ICSI and 14 fertilised and made it to day 3. Only 3 made it to day 5/6, but still much better outcome, so don't lose hope.

Be kind to yourself.

Big hugs and good luck on your next round.

Hi Gemma

I am sorry to hear you had no fertilised eggs, this must be really hard for you. I really wish you every success in your next treatment.

We have had 4 rounds of ivf with icsi. We have only ever had one5 day embryo. This embryo came from the round where following advice we both changed our diet (not that it was terrible to start with). It’s boring but I am 100% convinced this had an impact as in the 4th round we had 100% fertilisation which we had never had. We were advised to cut out all refined sugar, all processed meat, processed food, preservatives and reduce carbohydrates and increase antioxidants. Don’t get my wrong this diet can be really boring sometimes and it’s hard to start with but you get used to it. Sharing as I’m hoping this might help you to.

Sending you lots of luck and success wishes! Xx
