Ultrasound couldn’t see right ovary

Had transvaginal ultrasound today due to problems conceiving. They said lining and uterus is fine but couldn’t see my right ovary so referring me for CT scan. Anyone else had this? Should I be concerned?

Hi Hannah. The CT scan will find it if it's there. Occasionally one hides behind the womb. Fingers crossed. Diane

Hey, I don't know about your situation obviously but I have always had terrible problems with my left ovary. It hides behind my bowel or my womb and is sometimes not visible at all, and then randomly a week later tadaaa its there.

I really hope yours pops up too! x

My right ovary likes to play hide and seek too! They couldn’t see it on ultrasound scans or when I had a hycosy, but it’s most likely in a tricky position behind the womb and unlikely to be anything sinister. I was still able to have eggs collected from that ovary (and it was actually the ovary that responded best), I just needed general anaesthetic.

I've had many transvaginal ultrasounds throughout this process and randomly on the most recent one they couldn't see one of my ovaries, although this had never happened before. I guess we tend to think that body parts are stuck in place and stay put, but ovaries seem to be able to play hide and seek!!

I have one person who scans me at the clinic who can never find my right ovary so pushes and prods for ages before finding it, and others who see it straight away! seems like they do like to hide sometimes!

Thanks all, it is reassuring to know this can be quite common. I was surprised he didn’t really say anything about my left ovaries - he just said the lining and uterus all looked fine. Will just have to wait for the CT scan but seeing GP next week anyway so will see what they say too.

Just to update you - turns out it wasn’t so much that they couldn’t see my right ovary but that they could see something on my right ovary. Been told I either have a borderline ovarian tumour (non cancerous) or ovarian cancer. Won’t know which until they remove it and test it. I know this is a fertility group and I am very grateful for our two boys (we had been trying for #3). Will hopefully find out more on Friday about the surgery and what might be involved. I suspect at least my right ovary will be removed.
