Short or long protocol?

Hiya, just a quick question to you knowledgable people. I was due to start long protocol in July and they just contacted me to say that they have run out of buserelin (worldwide shortage apparently!) and that I could do a short protocol instead. I’m not too sure of the differences myself but more importantly is there reduced success rates with a short protocol? I’m 42 if age makes a difference. Thanks In advance for your help

Long protocol uses a medication to switch you off[ taken for a couple of weeks then have a withdrawal bleed ] so to speak then you get hormones injections to turn you back on ! Short protocol works more with your own hormones is more natural - shorter timescale - less meds - less chances of overstimulation and is used more often in older women - the clinic should explain it all to you nearer the time Good luck for the future

Thank you so much for your explaination. I was worried as originally they had me on long. They only switched because of the supply issues! This is reassuring 😃

I am suffering from lack of buserelin too! Can't get it anywhere it seems!

If its a ray of hope, I started IVF on long protocol at 38 I think I was and they told me they did that protocol on 'older' women.. anyway I only got 3 eggs. Next round they switched to short and I got 13!! And I stuck on short protocol all the way through my OE rounds... it really suited me well into my 40's! Heaps of luck xx

Thank you for your reply. Do you need bruceliin for your short protocol? Good luck to you too xx

No you don’t need it for short protocol - I am doing a different protocol this time x

Hi, I was 40 and had 2 long protocols - more eggs but none successful and then did a short protocol, fewer eggs but success. I think the short cycle is better for over - 40 as it doesn’t shut down ovaries before starting them up again like the long protocol does. I much preferred the short, like the OP said, it’s more natural and I found it a lot easier and less of a hormonal rollercoaster. Good luck 🍀

I was meant to be on Buserelin for my upcoming 3rd round and was also told there’s a shortage and I’ll be doing a different long protocol instead. I was a bit worried about the change of meds (I’m now having Prostap) but hoping it’ll do the same as Buserelin, just administered in a different way. Good luck 😊
