IVF self injecting

It’s my first time doing IVF, just wanted to know peoples experience with self injecting. How long did you all have to do it? And did you have the same brand of injections or can there be different ones that do the same job? Any side effects experienced?

Thanks x

Hiya. There are loads of different combinations of drugs and so there isn't really one set rule. Your consultant will give you a protocol and that will determine how long you inject for to start with, which will then also be influenced by how your body responds. Some drugs come in pre-filled syringes, some need to be drawn from a bottle and some need to be mixed, so anything goes really!

The one thing I think a lot of people on here would tell you is that whilst self injecting is often the thing people dread the most, for many of us it was the least difficult bit of IVF, you get used to doing it so quickly here there and everywhere.. and on the odd occasion it hurts its only short lived.

This is a great forum full of really amazing women and you will get heaps of help and support from people on here! So ask as many questions as you want! Heaps of luck! xx

Hi lovely. I’m an ivf newbie too but I’m almost at the end of my down reg on long protocol. It really depends on what your consultant thinks is the best plan for you as there can be so many different ways to approach it. I’m on the long protocol so have been self injecting once a day for the last 2 weeks. I’ll be starting another set of injections for stimms next week. The injections aren’t bad at all and only hurt for a few seconds. I find it helpful to just remind myself what I’m doing it for and then it makes them a lot easier. Sending lots of love x

Hi OA. There are so many brands and different types of stimulation drugs etc. Each clinic/specialist has their own preferences so tend to go with those, unless a change of plan is needed. If whatever you have is a bit sore, then meltan ice cube on the spot to help numb the area. Good luck! Diane

Only ever done short protocol. Injections with overleap for 7 days then 12 the second. I didn’t like fymredrel (sorry dyslexia for spelling). As that stung a little after injecting but few few side effects from stims. Some people use an ice pack but I have a cuddly tummy and had no problems with injecting.

I had Lubion too (progesterone) which was fine but did make me crampy and bloated. But I was on a massive dose.

Best of luck.

Hello , like others have said there are loads of different ones depending on what protocol you are on and whether a fresh or frozen transfer . I was dreading my very first time Injecting myself but after that first one you just get used to it … xx

It was one of the things I was worried about when I started IVF but it’s actually probably the easiest part of it all and your clinic will guide you through what’s best for you 🤗 good luck with everything xx

Hi. There are a lot of different combinations dependent on your clinic and cycle, if you ever have any concerns it’s definitely worth speaking to your clinic even if you think it’s a small questions they are there to support you. I was very nervous about the injections and have got my husband to administer them for me, not only does this help me but also involves him in the process which I think for us has really helped. There’s not much pain at all just the initial administration and instructions are really simple to follow (there’s also great videos that can help too). Side effects I’ve had light headaches and on the second round bruising on the injection site but eases with using an ice pack. Wishing you all the best for your journey! Stay strong you can do this!
