Day 2 post ICSI 9 fertilised but poor quality with fragmentation

Hello everyone,

I’m new here and was hoping you guys could give me your thoughts.

It’s my first round of ICSI. We have never tried IVF before.

On Wednesday I had my eggs collected - 13 collected, 11 mature. They called to say to say 9 have fertilised and divided which I should be happy about, but the embryologist caveated the news by saying all 9 are showing quite a bit of fragmentation. She did say that some could go on to form blastocysts but if I’m honest she didn’t sound hopeful.

I’m really trying to stay positive but it’s not easy. She said they’d call again tomorrow to update me, but I’m preparing myself for the worst. I suppose I wasn’t expecting all of them to have responded so similarly which makes me think there is a bigger problem than we thought. I thought some would look better than others.

Anyway I’m just hoping somebody else may have had a similar story or even a positive outcome 🤞🏼

Thank you all in advance!!!

Hi Wigwam,

We’ve just been through our first ICSI cycle too. On day 3 we had 3 eggs that showed some fragmentation. We were worried none would make it.

When they called again on day 5, two eggs were graded as 5AA, they said they were perfect! So they must of self corrected ?! One of them didn’t make it.

So don’t lose hope yet, it really can change hour by hour. 9 eggs is a wonderful number so you stand a good chance of getting a good one! Fingers crossed that some of your eggs make it 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

Try not to worry - easier said than done I know. When I tried to ask questions on day 3 the embryologists didn’t have any answers really. They said some eggs seem completely fine and then suddenly stop growing and others are slow developers / fragmented and then suddenly catch up! Keep the faith! Xxxxxxx

Hey! Just a little update…

We managed to get 2 blastocysts out of the 8 embryos that fertilised normally.

Weirdly neither of them were the front runners and one of them happened day 5 and the other day 6.

The day 5 embryo was 4ab/c day 6 was 4b/c.b/c

They both had borderline grading.

I was obviously over the moon and was not expecting it at all! We had the Day 5 embryo transferred on Day 5 (yesterday 28/2/22) and the other is being frozen.

So now we are starting the 2WW.

Your comments really did get me through the weekend so thank you so much xxx

Oh I am so pleased for you!!! Best of luck with the 2WW, I found it tricky not to test but was also so happy and grateful to have got to that point.Delighted you have an embie in the freezer too! ✨

11 mature eggs is great to start with and 9 out of 11 fertilizing and developing through day 2 is excellent. I think the fragmentation can correct itself but even if not the odds are that some would go on to be blasts given where you are now and that's a lot based on your numbers. We had one on each of our first and second round that hadn't looked too good from the start (we called them the runts!) and when it came to decisions on transfer and freezing, the clinic said if we had enough of a good quality, they wouldn't recommend transfering or freezing the runts. So if all of them were struggling and in the balance at day 5 blast stage, then maybe it's something to look into further but maybe keep hopeful for now. Also it only takes one. 🍀

Hi Wigwamtigerlily. Fingers crossed they may catch up and level off. Unfortunately it can happen, then all turns out well. Let's hope you are one of them it happens to. Diane

Hello lovely people,

We had an update this morning which hasn’t enlightened us any further really but it’s not all bad news. All 9 of the embryos are still active but only 4 of them have reached the 6 cells stage so 5 of them are slow and may not continue but they haven’t given up just yet. Of the 4 that have reached 6 cell stage 3 of them are grade 3bc and 1 is grade 3c (think that’s what she said anyway). She said there’s still a small glimmer of hope but didn’t sound very confident that we would produce a good blastocyst this round.

Again, I’m not sure what to think. I’m trying to not lose all hope but also think I need to be realistic about the outcome.

The lab are going to call again tomorrow with another update 🤞🏼

Thanks for you words of encouragement so far xxx
