Increase in AMH?

Hello, I’m wondering if anyone has ever experienced a similar situation before? Two years ago my AMH was 2.5pmol. This summer is was undetectable (I wasn’t having periods at the time). Then I’ve re-tested but used an at home test and sent off to a lab for testing. The results came back as 5.4pmol. I’m so confused! I’m a lot healthier than I was previously but I’m wondering whether there’s an error with the result. If anyone has experienced anything similar please do let me know :) x

I've had different results when using different labs, neither were done at home. My first result was 3.5 pmol. My second result 6 months later was 9.3 pmol 🤔

Thank you for your response! That’s so strange isn’t it! X

I've replied this to quite a few people now who are all suprised that there AMH has increased. When it was first discovered and embraced by clinicians- AMH was seen as the most accurate measure of egg reserves and an indicator how women respond to ivf hormones. It didn't vary during menstrual cycles and the number only goes down while you age. But more recently people have found that it rises and falls depending when in the month you are measuring your AMH. And some women have found that their AMH increases. Some say it's due to life style changes or taking DHEA- others say they have done nothing differently. Ultimately AMH isn't the measuring tool they thought: you can have a relatively low AMH (like myself) and do well when stimulated. Others have an ok AMH with a very high FSH and have very little eggs to collect. You'll only know until you do a cycle. And that low AMH says anything about the quality of your eggs is a myth as well. Age is the most important. X

Thank you so much for this, so helpful!! I know I don’t respond well when stimulated but the increase just made me think for a second that would change - wishful thinking! Thank you again 💕

But it might change- you never know. I did 4 stimulated rounds all on the same amount of menopur except for the last. The first I had 9 eggs but only 4 fertilised (2 blastocysts). Then about 5 months after that I got 11 eggs but only 1 fertilised (no blastocysts). Another 6 months later I got only 5 but they all fertilised and all made it to blastocysts (3 still in the freezer in UK). Then I moved to the Netherlands and did another round a year later. All my cycles were with 375 menopur but in NL 300 is the max. This time I got 12 eggs, 6 fertilised and 5 made it to blastocysts (one top grade). I must have had pretty low AMH by then but although it was measured I didn't even want to know. But it might have gone up and maybe that's why it went better. Who knows? What I'm trying to say is you only know how you respond when stimulated. And everytime you're stimulated you may respond differently. Perhaps it is because AMH rises and falls? Point is there is simply no accurate measuring tool. And I hate it how women are dissuaded or rejected by the NHS for funding, to try IVF on the basis of their AMH reading. I hope that makes sense! Good luck x

That all makes perfect sense! Thanks for taking your time to write this, it really is so incredibly helpful. I completely agree with you on the NHS front, something I experienced. I needed this. Thanks so much again and good luck to you 💕x

I've also read that being on the contraceptive pill can reduce your AMH (not long term, but temporarily), I had mine tested a few years ago before I started IVF and it was a bit on the low side, but I later found out that because I was still on the pill at the time the result probably looked lower than it really was. When I later came to do IVF I responded well and always got plenty of eggs (although the quality was questionable!). This probably doesn't apply in your situation, but I just mean it seems like there are quite a few things which can influence AMH. Good luck hun 😊

Thank you for this, so helpful!! Just helps knowing that there are factors that do affect it. Thanks again 💕
