High prolactin and shbg

Hi everyone, so I did an advanced hormone test with medichecks and its come back mostly normal except I seem to have high prolactin (636) and shbg (161).

A quick Google search has indicated these both affect fertility. My question is could that be in any way responsible for my issues - recap of 5 years trying, never pregnant, 1 failed ivf with 13 eggs, only 2 fertilitised. Bfn.

Hope all the wise people on here might be able to shed some light. I've an initial consultation with a new clinic on Thursday and I'd like to sound like I know what I'm talking about lol

Thanks all you lovely people xx

There can be many causes for the blood results - best not to check Dr Google too much - the clinic will explain the results to you and what they plan to do They don't expect you to know everything Sure your appointment will go well

Good luck

Janet

Thanks Janet. I suspect the prolactin might be more stress related tbh! Suppose I was more wondering if these results are worth mentioning x

Hi lovely

I think I remember seeing that Cinderella5 had issues with high prolactin. Perhaps she’ll be able to advise xx

Hi,

I had high prolactin levels too and saw an endocrinologist who has put me on some medication to control the levels. I had two miscarriages and not sure if related.

Medication has kept the levels under control. Hope that’s useful

Hi I did the same test and had high prolactin . I repeated the test after 4 weeks and it was normal. So could just be stress.

This happened to me as well, this was years ago before I was even trying to conceive. It was high and then just went back down and so far has never gone back up.

Think we stress ourselves out so much with ivf that it starts to affect our hormones :( but it’s hard to stay calm going through all this. My consultant said they wouldn’t be worried until it went over the 1000’s

Hi! So I had raised prolactin about the same level as yours. I had an MRI scan and it showed nothing, no tumour. It’s not a hugely raised level but I also was concerned it can affect fertility. But the doctors confirmed I ovulate so it wasn’t. You can take meds to reduce the levels but they’re not nice, made me feel like I was a drug addict on a come down. So I didn’t take them in the end. I was also concerned that I read it can cause miscarriage which I’d experienced but the doc said that was levels of 1200 and near the beginning as prolactin often rises in pregnancy anyway. So all I can say is it was a bit of an anomaly. They said it wasn’t very raised and sometimes people have higher levels and it’s normal for them. Hope this helps although the info I received was not very helpful

Oh that's all really interesting! I've been having trouble pinpointing my ovulation and keep thinking I've missed it. I really hope I can locate it this month! Otherwise I will really worry x

Have they done any scans to check that you are ovulating? That’s how I know I definitely was

I've just been testing with clearblue so far. I had that checked a couple of years ago and obviously I had my recent round of ivf with 13 eggs in October so I just assumed I was still. Since then I haven't seen a positive

I was having scans regularly with the fertility clinic so they were able to tell id been ovulating. You might want to book one for after the point of which you think you will. But if you’ve had no positives from the clear blue it’s possible you haven’t been ovulating and prolactin could quite easily be the reason why. Has your doctor referred you to the endocrinologist? As mine did, as they want to check for tumours on the pituitary gland. They also did a long blood test where I had to lie down for a time to check it wasn’t stress- and it wasn’t as my levels didn’t change. If you had good AMH and they medicated you to grow the eggs that’s all possible without you ovulating naturally.

Thanks for the advice. I haven't seen my consultant yet as I've my first appt tomorrow. I did the test through medicare. But I'll be sure to raise this tomorrow x
