All my eggs failed to fertilise with ICSI second time round

This was our second and final fresh go at retrieving and fertilizing my eggs. I have stage 4 endometriosis and PCOS. My husband has low sperm motility so we had ICSI.

My first round of ICSI we got 8 eggs, 5 were mature ad 4 fertilised. 3 embryos failed to implant and one successfully did but when I went to have my 12 week scan, I sadly had a missed miscarriage.

This time round we had 6 eggs, 5 were mature and out of those they failed to fertilise.

I was so pleased we had 6 eggs to begin with as I wasn't expecting that, partly as my right ovary was a no go.

We received a call from our embryoligist this morning to say that none had fertilised. She was shocked as I was fine last time and asked whether anything had changed from last time such as medication, but nothing has changed. The only difference is that I upped the dose of my Gonal F injection which if anything helps.

The embryoligist is going to speak with my fertility doctor today to see if they can come to a conclusion and in the meantime has said that she'll monitor these for the next 24 hours as there is such thing as a late fertilisation.

Has anyone experienced this or can share any stories?

Hi Ljayne. I was so sorry to read this. I wondere whether something like an IMSI cycle would be better so they can see the inside of the sperm better. Perhaps even a sperm fragmentation check? Hopefully your embryologist can come up with a solution. Thinking of you. Diane

Hi Ljayne,

So sorry to hear about your MMC and the non-fertilisation! It's heartbreaking!!

I've been in a very similar situation to yourself - first cycle 7 eggs, 1 pgta normal tested frozen embie. Second cycle 3 eggs of which none fertilised! Was completely devastated. The doctors assumed it was a problem with egg quality (I'm 38 with diminished ovarian reserve). I think this is an overly simplistic explanation. We also have pathological sperm (low morphology and low motility). Sperm dna fragmentation was OK. They're currently doing a study at Oxford uni looking at protein in sperm that activate the egg which I think might have been the problem for us - we'll have results in a few weeks. I'll keep you posted! What are you planning to do? Let me know what your doctors say, keeping my fingers crossed for you!! xxx

Hi lovelyDo you mind me asking how you got enrolled in the study at Oxford? I’d be keen to see if we’d be eligible. Thanks! xx
