Any hope of delayed fertilisation?

Hi All,

I had my egg collected yesterday and they retrieved 7 eggs. However I received the dreaded call this morning that none of the eggs fertilised. They said 2 eggs were not mature but they later matured. Is there any hope that they could still fertilise? We were told it’s unlikely and I feel so disappointed 😢

Couldn't read without posting a comment Kiri. I'm so sorry to hear this. I know only too well how much of a shock this is. My first cycle, when doing IVF solo (long story), I had 5 eggs removed and all were mature, but none fertilised. It hadn't even occurred to me that zero eggs would fertilise. It's rare, but sometimes sperm and eggs just don't 'like' each other. I'd used a donor that cycle and it was just bad luck, they weren't fundamentally compatible. Actually, 2 did fertilise late, miraculously, and developed on the path to being blasts, but didn't get there and couldn't be transferred. But I will never forget that call. It's just the worst. Your consultant will be giving you their insights as to why this happened, I'm sure, to make sure it cannot happen again. Thinking of you x

Thank you for replying. It’s absolutely devastating news. I’m sorry you’ve been through it too. I’m grateful for your kind words. Hopefully the follow up appointment will shed some light x

Hi there,

Sorry to hear this happened. This also happened to me. I had 3 eggs collected 2 did not fertilise and 1 they waited for it to mature the day after it was extracted. luckily it matured and fertilised through icsi and made it to blast stage and was a 5bb and had it stored to transfer later as I couldn't get it freshly transferred as it was delayed icsi. There is hope, keep positive. I hope it works out for you xx

Hi Kiri, I’m so sorry to hear this. IVF is such a lottery and when you think it’s all going smoothly it smacks you in the face. I’ve definitely learned how to cope with disappointment through all this. I don’t have any advice but just wanted to send a big hug and say you’re not alone. Your dr can put you on a different drug protocol to help the eggs mature more and not sure if you’ve looked at sperm fragmentation but it might be worth delving in to that? Xx

Thank you for your kind words. We are going to have a follow-up appointment and look to work on the male factor a bit more to see if this may give us a better chance. It’s heartbreaking and it makes it worse knowing so many others have been through this and more. Wishing you all the best on your journey x

Hi Kiri23, I’m all new to this but I have heard similar situations like you where the clinic was able to do ICSI- inject the egg with the sperm. Can they not do that? Just asking. If not I would consider switching clinics- there is always a way and you will get your baby. Don’t give up!

Hey. We used ICSI but I think we need to work on the male factor more to try and increase our chances and then try again. Thanks for your positivity xx
