Disheartening very thin linning from 10.2 to 4 and fresh transfer potentially being cancelled

Hi ladies, I hope you're all well in your parts of your journeys.

I've had my third egg retrieval yesterday which doesn't look as promising as my others previously. But I am waiting for one of the most dreaded call this morning.

I was on short protocol and on my first scan after 7 days of injections my linning was 10.2, however in my third scan the linning went to 7.4 and yesterday my linning was 4. My consultant wouldn't recommend a transfer below 5 but as I want a fresh cycle transfer she has discussed to start my pessaries on sunday. Especially if its unlikely I get any blastocyst then I would do a 3rd day transfer. However, If we do have a good blastocyst I'm not sure whether I would risk putting an embroyo back with such thin linning.

I wanted to ask have any of you ladies been through anything similar? My lining has never gone down so much before or at all, so it was quite disheartening. I have had water on my linning previously and my fet was cancelled due to it.

Also I'm still bloated from my egg retrieval and still can feel slight pain in my ovaries and having on and off stomach cramps. Whilst in my first egg retrieval where I had ohss and dont recall being in as much pain. And I definitely have not over stimulated this time round.

Thank you all in advance x

Hi Sammy246: It appears chances are lowered if the lining is <8mm, among other factors. While there are stories of success with as low as 4mm, I understand that they are rare.

I had a lining of 7.6mm on a natural cycle, which went down to 6mm. That cycle was cancelled. Previous medicated cycle: lining was about 8mm, it was not successful. A recent natural cycle, lining went to 9mm, but miscarried the pregnancy at about 7 weeks.

Whether you risk it I guess depends on how you feel and other factors e.g. you are young enough to continue to try if this does not work out.

All the best to you.

I'm so sorry about your loss, it's so heartbreaking to be given hope of a pregnancy and then end up with a miscarriage.

I wish I was young or had strated this journey much earlier. I'm 41 now but have been on the IVF journey since the age of 39. My main worry is that if we need to do a 3 day transfer as the embroyos ain't developing as much, then I'm really in a loss battle anyhow.

In my previous cycles my linning has always been over 9mm. Xx

Was there a change in the medications? Do they check the lining on day of or day before transfer?

My protocol was similar to my second protocol but I have had less eggs than previous round. But I'm hoping the egg quality is better due to fewer eggs. But just really surprised with my linning and boy sure where I've gone wrong xx

They will check the linning on the day of transfer. On previous rounds it was never an issue so dont think they checked it on the day but tomorrow they will and when I had water on my linning, they had cancelled that round of transfer a few days before hand x

My consultant said that it’s not so much the thickness that’s an issue, rather if the thickness changes it can show that the lining is unstable and not ideal. They do like it to be above 8mm too but will do a transfer if it’s lower but triliminar x

I was really shocked too when they told me that my thickness has reduced substantially, as it's never happened in previous cycles and naively I didnt even know such things can happen. But I guess everything is possible with IVF xx

I had exactly the same - never had a lining issue then all of a sudden it was struggling to get over 6mm.... sometimes these things just pop up. Fortunately it was a bit of a one off for me and the next time it thickened fine :) Are you having a transfer today? x

I've been booked in for tomorrow but it really depends on my linning and my embroyos. If they are freezable quality then I wont be risking them by transferring them but if they are not, then I rather have the transfer and pray for the best x

I think that sounds very wise! Always best to have everything looking at it's best. But if you do have to transfer then there is always the possibility that it will work! Wishing you all the best xx

How did you get on? xx

We transfered two as they weren't freezable and the clinic would have discarded them. My linning is still the same at 4mm but thinner at certain part and my ovaries are enlarged and sore from the egg collection. They are not pgs tested and with my previous miscarriages, Ideally I wanted to transfer pgs tested embryos. The odds are against us but I just couldnt discard them. I rather transfer them and give them that small chance. Did you go for fresh transfer or freeze all x

That sounds like the most wise plan - and you absolutely never know - stay strong. We froze all because I wanted to PGS - having never had a pregnancy I need some answers. Everything crossed for you my lovely xxx

Thank you and good luck with the pgs testing and subsequent transfer. That wait in itself is torturous xx

Thank you - yes I'm a bit nervous that none will be normal - but there's nothing we can do about that so we'll see!! xx

We had no normal chromosomal embroyos in our last cycle which is why I was hoping to transfer 1 fresh and then get the rest tested but we've done worse in terms of having good/decent blastocyst this time round xx

Did you ever find out what was going on? Did you get checked for any post retrieval infection causing the problem?

My apologies I didnt see your message earlier. No we didnt find out anything then, but after my review meeting last week with my consultant, she wants to check my lining during this menstrual cycle (natural cycle) to see whether it was one off issue or whether I need any other medication etc. I am booked in for a scan. We will then decide which steps to take whether I can go ahead with the frozen transfer etc xx
