Levothyroxine to prevent miscarriage in euthyroid with positive thyroid antibodies

Has anyone who is currently euthyroid (normal thyroid function range) but with positive thyroid antibodies, taken low dose levothyroxine to help prevent miscarriage, starting 1 month before transfer? If so, when you stopped, did your thyroid function return to normal range or did you become dependent on levothyroxine, even after pregnancy?

Euthyroid with anti-TPO ab here. I have been on 25mg Levothyroxine since last June (had two failed transfers in the meantime and I am currently preparing for a new fresh cycle in May).

I have been told that I need to take it until the end of the pregnancy and possibly a few months after delivery. All the doctors I spoke with said that the dose is very low, and, if the thyroid does not degenerate in the meantime (due to the Ab and underlying disease and not to the medication) my thyroid will start again to work as expected once I stop.

Hope this helps xx

Hi MofM, thank you for your reply. Sorry to hear about your failed transfers, I hope your next one works. I think the endocrinologist is looking to put me on 50mg. I think I’d rather be on 25mg. I’ve got enough health issues that I don’t want to add to them by making my thyroid lazy. Severe Endometriosis and Adenomyosis plus pernicious anaemia already and low reserve here. 🙃

There is no way that your thyroid can get lazy. It can fail in the meantime due to the underlying issue, that is your antibodies attacking it, but not due to the medications. This has been told to me by a) my reproductive endocrinologist, b) two thyroid specialist (one of which is my home country), and c) my GP. I would trust the doctor on this!

Thanks, that is what I needed to hear!! This advice has come from a thyroid specialist in my home country too.
