Hubby was told in 2019 he had healthy sperm and this week was hold he has poor motility and abnormal morphology. We have now been encouraged to do ICSI instead of the standard IVF. He has been hospitalised twice due to his severe asthma and has had quite a few courses of steroids. Can that affect his sperm?
Thanks

Im so sorry to hear this. We have male infertility so I've learnt SO much about what does and doesn't affect sperm! 😅 Steriods can have a terrible effect on men's sperm depending on dosage, length of time on them and which ones. But the good news is that once you stop steroids and focus on just doing things to help produce "healthy sperm" like lifestyle changes, supplements and maybe medications, sperm comes back because men keep making sperm. It makes it much easier for them to improve their sperm quality than it does for us to improve our egg quality. So talk to your doc about things you can do to improve quality and you can get his sperm re-tested a month or two later depending on when your cycle is planned for.
Otherwise I would suggest doing everything you can to build healthy sperm and eggs and agree to ICSI if that is recommended. After my egg collection my hubby had to produce 2 samples just to have enough sperm to fertilise my 6 eggs! But it was healthy enough when they checked it on the day for them to feel confident that ICSI wasn't needed and natural would work (which it did)- very unexpected for us 😊 So you won't know exactly what the situation may be until the day comes. Good luck!
Thank you so much for reaching out! Yeah we had signed up for Ivf and now will be changing to icsi! I’m just scared as I’ve got pcos and so not sure about how much medication I’m going to need 😓
They will monitor you closely and as you take the injections monitor how you are feeling and let them know if something worries you! You got this! Xxxx
Don’t worry about it, if he had good count with ICSI the embryologist will pick the most percent sperm and inject it into the egg so abnormal forms are irrelevant 😉good luck 🍀🤞🏻Xx
Thank you hun! I just feel like we are constantly battling with three thousand different issues. I’ve got pcos, high BMI, high amh and now poor sperm 😳 xx
Allthingsivf; thanks so much for posting! I'm feeling much the same. We're just at the start of the process - had our first consultation about the process, reading about it. I had my transvaginal ultrasound which she thinks I may have PCOS, and low egg reserve. So having an AMH blood test but read it varies from cycle to cycle and time of cycle and surgery which I have had excision of my endometriosis about 3 weeks ago, so it's probably going to flag as low. Hubby is having his sperm checked and we're worried about that. I have a high BMI so may have to look at private rather than NHS - my BMI has never been below 30 as I work out loads and build muscle. I'm 36 so age isn't with us and have Hashimoto's
Apologies if you don't want me to post on your post, just wanted to say it makes me feel a little better to have others going through the same things / worries etc.
No thank you for reaching out! I think it best to go private as they are more likely to make things happen more quickly! I spent 5 years trying to convince them to give me clomid and by that time by husbands sperm became unhealthy. Well good luck to you too ❤️
