Double embryo transfer or single embryo transfer

Hi all, I'm currently going through my IVF, started on menapur and femdroyl. I'm going back tomorrow and hopefully they tell me I'm ready for my egg transfer! Hubby and I have been thinking about our embryo transfer whether we go for double or single and waying up the pros and cons. I was just wondering what you all did? I know there are consequences with double transfers and the doctors do scare when they tell you about it. But the though of having twins after waiting so long would be amazing! I just want to hear what you all did? Xx

This is something my husband and I agonised over throughout the whole process, but as it turned out we only had 2 eggs and only 1 fertilised so it was taken out of our hands. Husband preferred a single transfer as his main concern was wanting me and the baby to be ok, whereas I was looking at the bigger picture of our age (I’m 41 and he’s 47) and wanting a slightly higher chance of success (and if it came to it, a bigger family if it went well and twins arrived). We’re going through round 2 at the minute and have decided on a double transfer if it’s an option this time. The chances of success with IVF are so slim for me that I’ll take the risks associated with twin pregnancy to increase that x

I debated this too. The thought of twins is amazing but it’s also a much more complicated pregnancy with higher risks to the babies and yourself.

With my last round I only ended up with one embryo to transfer.

For my most recent round I had 12 eggs fertilise out of 14 (did ICSI), all 12 made it to day 5. 6 were suitable for freezing and due to my age (41) we’d elected to do PGS testing. Out of the 6 that were tested and frozen 3 came back genetically perfect. So I have 3 top quality frozen embryos. And because they have been tested my clinic policy is to only transfer one at a time.

My point being, it is all a numbers game. Wait and see how many eggs they collect, how many fertilise and how they progress. If you have a good number of embryos you may want to transfer 2. If your numbers are lower you may want to be more cautious as with every round your clinic will fine tune your protocol as they understand more about how your body responds.

Good luck for your EC- that’s a huge milestone in itself xx

I had a second fresh cycle in November resulting in 3 x 5 day blastocysts. We had to decide whether to get them tested or do a single or double transfer. Two out of three deteriorated after we decided to get them tested, and the remaining one was normal. The embryologist said it was good we hadn't transferred 2 as the one that deteriorated could have caused the good one to fail to implant. I think your chances are better transferring separately. I also think having twins would be very hard! I am incredibly blessed to have a 5 year old, and that was hard enough when he was newborn! I also don't think I'd manage to breast feed or carry in a sling both of which were really important to me.
