Low AMH, no viable embryos after PGS

Hello, I am 38 and have low AMH. Had my egg retrieval on 11th Jan. Ended up with 3 blasts after 5 days which we were delighted with. The clinic told us that they looked good.

Just had the results of the PGS testing today and they are all chromosome abnormal. I’m devastated. Just feel so down.

My husband wants to try another egg retrieval. I just feel convinced that the same thing will happen again and we’ll end up spending a fortune with nothing to show for it.

Does anyone have any advice or has anyone been in the same situation?

I read this whole thing in 3 hours....she had exactly the same experience as you with no normal embryos, but eventually got her little boy xx

Ps. Each cycle can be different, so don’t give up. Normally it takes three cycles to get a result x

Hiya lovely

I'm so sorry for your disappointment but please don't give up hope!

I'm also 38 with super low AMH (2.8 over a year and a half ago)

Our ivf failed last summer after trying naturally for ages and getting nowhere..however I went on loads of supplements and to my surprise we got naturally pregnant in sept ..currently 20 weeks. I'm convinced the supplements improved my eggs so if you're not taking anything please look into it for at least 3 months before trying again. Def look at ubiquinol. I took 400 per day

Wishing you all the luck in the world xxx

Not sure where you are based but in the UK the HFEA don’t recommend PGS testing as it can class things as abnormal when they aren’t. I’m not sure about the rules regarding transferring abnormal ones once tested but many clinics, including mine, don’t do PGS testing as they don’t think it is helpful. Was there a reason you had the testing done? Could you do another round without testing them and just go by morph alone? Xx

I am sorry you are going through this. I can't be helpful, but your might want to discuss with your doc whether RPR (mesotherapy treatment to ovaries/Ovarian PRP rejuvenation) and/or acupuncture might improve ovarian reserve and increase your chances of getting pregnant through IVF. Good luck!

Yes, definitely try again. I am 37, started ICSI from 35. Went through 5 cycles, finally got 3 normal PGS tested blastocysts in the last cycle. Waiting for more tests to prepare the transfer. You may think the younger the better but not really, each month, the quality of eggs and sperms are different. There is always hope. Take some COQ10 300-400 per day will help to improve the quality of eggs. And your husband can take some supplements as well.

We had 2 of our embryos pgs tested back in july- the only 2 from that ivf cycle. Both came back abnormal and I convinced myself it was my bad eggs. I got pregnant naturally 2 months later and am now 17 weeks in. Just because those came back abnormal, doesn't mean they all will. Also, it's up to you obviously, but if we'd have had another cycle, we'd decided not to pgs test, and my advice would be to do the same. If you only get two, just shove them in, see how they get on. Research on pgs/pgt-a is a bit sketchy anyway. I could write you an essay on it but all I'll say is that in the US abnormal embryos have been put back... and gone on to result in healthy pregnancies. Give it another shot, shove them in, give them a chance xx

I agree, transfer them first and see what happens. Then think of next steps.

Also agree with other comments that CoQ10 improves egg quality as well as DHEA both for 6 weeks at lest. Good luck!

Kate,

Did the embryologist comment on the morphology of your eggs? Achieving 5 day blasts is a good outcome, I’d have been tempted to transfer the two best. Is there a specific reason you have done PGS testing? You can read what the HFEA say about it here:

hfea.gov.uk/treatments/expl...

Good luck Xx

Thank you for the replies. It really helped to read them. I was feeling so despondent yesterday, slightly better today.

In regards to why we had the PGS - we are currently living overseas and with the current situation couldn’t travel back to the UK for treatment. Our Consultant here advised to have the PGS due to my age and low AMH. I kind of wish we hadn’t had it now as I’m reading more and more evidence about how it can be unreliable.

I don’t know the morphology. I’m seeing our Consultant today so will find out then. I’d be tempted to transfer but I don’t know what our consultants views are, I think it will depend on how ‘abnormal’ they are.

It’s such a rollercoaster. I was on such a high last week when we achieved 5 day blasts. Realistically we can only have so many egg retrieval’s before we run out of money. My fear is that this will happen with all of them.

Thank you again for the replies xx

So I saw my Consultant today. There is one embryo that might be possible to transfer. We are being referred to a Genetic Counsellor so will wait and see what that brings.

Onwards and upwards, will start stims for another retrieval next month and hope for better results.

Hi Kate, sorry you are having to go through all of this. It is such a roller coaster. With my NHS clinic I was able to book an appointment to speak with the head embryologist. I met twice with her and both times were really informative & what sealed our decision to move to donor eggs. It’s worth checking if this is an option in your clinic to have a meeting with the embryologist. It was so useful to hear exactly what they see with the egg & sperm, how they fertilise & divide etc. Hope this helps Xx
