I know the grading doesn’t matter as such, but looking for a bit of reassurance, I guess?
I had 12 embryos doing really well, then I get the call this am to say that one has been frozen as 1BB and another has been frozen as an ungraded early blastocyst. Today is day 5. The rest are being given one more day, then potentially frozen tomorrow? We have one 1CC being watched until tomorrow too. We’ll see what tomorrow brings, I guess!
Has anyone had any 1BB success? I’m worried it’ll be too early and will fail miserably when transferred!
Thanks!

Undoubtedly a 1BB is a very early blastocyst - but that’s not say it wouldnt be a 4 or 5BB on Day 6 so actually it has just as good a chance of success as a Day 5 as long as it’s put back at the right time
One of my twins (likely my little girl) is a Day 6 4BB
I just have this feeling.....I transferred a day 5 5BA which was thawed on day 3 and very active when it went in as had been “awake” for 2 days by that point and was developing really quickly. And a slower Day 6 4BB which was thawed an hour or so before transfer.
Every scan I had from 6 weeks onwards showed one baby much bigger than the other and growing faster. The slower smaller one implanted at the bottom of my uterus and it was then shown she was a girl - she stayed small the entire pregnancy and at birth was almost 2lb smaller
I did read a study once which suggested that there is a skew to more boys being born by IVF because make embryos tend to be faster and stronger looking at day 3-5 and so when an embryologist is choosing which to transfer the male ones tend to be chosen. The study suggested female embryos tend to
Be slower to reach blastocyst. Obviously this isn’t true for everyone though
Thank you! Sorry to sound silly, but as they’re already frozen, will they be thawed the day before transfer and then transferred as a day 6 blast? First timer here... absolutely the novice!! Congrats on your pregnancy! Wishing you a happy and healthy 9 months!
No to have the same success rate as a Day 5 they have to thaw the Day 6 and put it back as of it was a Day 5 (ie 5 days post ovulation) so that it’s in sync with the uterus
It means it’s a very very early blastocyst but that’s not to say it won’t become a 4BB or 5BB when thawed out. It’s early days but I’m currently 8 weeks with twins. One of them was frozen as a 3BB, but thawed to be a 4BB on the day xx
Thank you! Out of curiosity, how long before transfer do they thaw? Forgive my ignorance, I am on my first cycle of IVF! Congratulations on your pregnancy! Twins... how amazing! I wish you a happy and healthy 9 months xx
Thanks lovely. It was our 3rd FET so we knew we wanted to put two in. Out of the two they thawed on the day one didn’t survive so they went to our least developed one in the batch (the 3BB) and within about 45 mins it was a 4BB and ready for transfer. My first FET of a 4AA was a BFN so I don’t trust grades too much. Best of luck to you xxx
Wow, so they can develop further really quickly then?! It really is incredible what our bodies and cells can achieve! I’m so chuffed for you having a successful transfer! Thank you, I feel like I’m clutching at straws a little now, but tomorrow may bring a slightly stronger candidate to the party. So, we will see! 🤞🏼 Xx
Yes, I was really surprised by how quickly they can spring back to life and develop. Also, I had a few that were graded with Cs in them but managed to turn it around after a few hours and become B grades before being frozen. When is your transfer? Good luck? Xx
Amazing. I have hope yet 😂🙈. I am not sure, need a withdrawal bleed, then a period (which will be fun as I have no periods naturally) and I’ve been told to expect transfer around May/June time. So I have no idea. I really hope that it isn’t that long! ☹️
I am PCOS too, I just don’t ovulate, so natural periods for me - ever. I got a phonecall this morning to say I now also have a 4BB and a 5BB in the extras they were watching. So I am so relieved!! I may ask for the pill though, that may be a good shout!
Ahh yay, that’s awesome news! Lots of chances for success now! 🌟 Yes, worth asking for the pill. Sometimes I get put on norehisterone to bring on a period but I prefer the pill as easier to schedule a bleed xxx
Thank you! I feel so relieved! I am going to type up an email to them this evening and then request that as a part of the treatment going forward. I usually have norethisterone, but as they expect my lining to be 6mm or above to prescribe it, it can take ages to get there. I don’t know if they’ll let me have the pill though ☹️ Xx
That's really encouring i have three embryos at a 3BB , my son was a 5AB, so hoping when thawed it expands to a 4BB or more! Best wishes for your 7 months left of your pregnancy. Twins wow!!! xx
Thank you! I can only hope I get to a 3BB. Currently a 1BB and a 1CC that was given another 24 hours is all I’ve got! Plus an ungraded blast as it was too early to grade in the freezer... ☹️
It’s interesting they froze a very early blast. In my last cycle we had one early blast which they kept it until day 7 and it stopped growing. I was very upset they did not freeze it , not sure why they didn’t freeze it on day 6 !
I had two 5AAs, one of which is also asleep upstairs. One other ungraded blast, which is still in the freezer. One 4AA that failed and another that is still in the freezer. xx
Thank you! I do my best to not worry about it! I’ve seen so many more success stories with “poorer” quality embryos than better quality! So all hope is not lost (yet 😂) xx
Yes grading only 'guides the embryologist' to a point. The genetic makeup and ability to to grow into a successful pregnancy no embryologist can know just by looking at a tiny tiny cluster of cells. I'm sure in nature not every child born is a top quality blast! x
Absolutely! I do get that, it’s just a worry when it comes to it being (at the time) my own graded blast. All you want is the best, even when you know that the best is still sometimes not good enough! Xx
Apparently 1or 2 grading is different in different clinics using various grading system.Ours this year was graded 1ab and 2bb and I was very upset until I found out in this clinic they grade oppositely with 1 being the top quality!
I am not sure what type of grading is this as I could not find such convention online with 1 being the top for day 5 grading with accompanying letters aa, bb... etc
In my previous clinic we had 3Ab and that I know 5 or 6 was the most expanded blastocyst!
How strange?! I don’t understand why with these things people can’t just stick to a universal grading system to make it easy for everyone! My clinic most definitely considered the 1BB a very early blast and the 5BB a hatching blast! So I know they have gone with the normal way of grading!
I know.. right? on top of all stress n anxiety of doing ivf add this grading confusion! I was getting so mad couldn’t put any meaning to this and the lab did not provide any more explanation!
Ah man, I would have been so stressed too! I’m sorry you had to go through that! It’s not the easiest of journeys as it is, like you said! How long ago did that happen?
I did my last ivf a month ago and one more one month before that! We’re just doing the embryo banking, no transfer yet. We’ve had 3 blastocyst so far frozen.
I did mini ivf , low dose Menopure and letrozol protocol.
We are going to do another one most probably when I get my period in early March beacuse I wanted to give myself break and also go on DHEA for at least 6 weeks, but need to talk to Dr before that. She’s one of the difficult ones gave me so much hard time with her behavior but her knowledge is very good and she is very detail oriented. So far the only one we had better results with.
However for my next one I am going to ask her opinion on doing a full ivf instead of mini so my rest of follies get help growing to being mature, Will see if she agrees. She’s very opiniated and stubborn and no bedtime manner at all! Always blaming me for my age ( I just turned 45) and anatomical problems as per her last phone message she me after last ivf( she’s referring to one Adenomyosis I have which as per her makes maintaining pregnancy difficult) 😖😖😢😢
That sounds so stressful! I take my hat off to you, if the Dr was like that with me, I’d have switched clinics. I just think that no matter how clever, how much experience you have end no matter how right you know you are, being polite costs nothing. On that principle I would have said something and gave them the chance to sort their attitude out and then after that I’d have tapped out. I’m sorry that they treated you that way!
Thanks very much! I agree with you 100% . Only god knows what things people go through other than dealing with medications and clinic commutes during infertility treatments! This is the third clinic I have bern into furing the last 4 years and already they wasted so much if our time and money, but thesd teo round we had great quality embryos and there are very few Drs available to work with patients this age with their own eggs!
I thought that maybe after she sees our great results she stops blaming my age but she didn’t , and that’s why I still am hesitated to talk to her since trigger day bcuz she talked to me very badly and waited me for 3 hours for a dingle ultrasound and blamed my anatomy for all mistakes technicians did in measurements of follies which me ended up paying $15k only for one egg ! Now my DH to contact her admin for an appointment. Her admin is worst than her!
Covid gave a good reason to them not to set appointments despite its ok to hVe doctors apps during this time.
So long story short I am very upset and sngry sbout her but kinda stuck with her for the time being!
The process here to being referred to a specialist is another pain kn the a.. on top of everything and their wait times is for ever! Imagin what happens if I want to change clinic spdcially now sith Corona going on
And last but not least doing ivfs in multiple clinics has other hassels of transfering embryos. We have one embryo left with previous clinic still and paying for that too!!
