DNA fragmentation - does NHS do this test before IVF?

Hello everyone! We have been referred to IVF on NHS but in order to have better chance I want to take some tests (on NHS and privately ) before the procedure. What tests do you suggest are good to be taken befor IVF? We are with unexplained infertility and have been ttc for more than 4 years. Any help will be highly appreciated! Thank you!

Hi Medes,

The NHS do not test for this, nor do they test for antibodies on sperm initially either, although they would discover antibodies whilst actually doing IVF-ICSI in any event.

The DNA fragmentation test is about £500 and some (not all) private clinics do it and usually they need to send the sample off to be tested as they can rarely do it in-house.

NHS tend to focus on the woman, with usual bloods (21-day progesterone, AmH, FSH & LH), a follicle count and scan on the ovaries. They should also check your tubes (Hycosy) and check your thyroid.

For men they usually do a simple semen analysis test which may be repeated depending on the result. Private clinics do test for antibodies as standard though.

There would then be further tests for either one of you, if an issue was discovered though.

Good luck xx

Thank you very much for your thorough response, Ladypii!

I am planning to take some immunological tests (NK cells, APA, RIP). I had the standard hormone tests, HSG, ANA and ATA. But I am not sure what are the tests my husband should take, except the usual spermogram . So I guess it is a good idea for him to take the test for DNA fragmentation together with the one for antibodies on sperm before the IVF.

Thank you once again for your help!

Hi Medes. The DNA fragmentation test has to be paid for privately, even if is recommended by a NHS clinic. When you have your first consultation, you will be notified of all the pre treatment tests needed. Diane

Hi if you use examen lab the DNA fragmentation test is £250. You do need a doctor to interpret the results. Check your thyroid reserves. The thing with immune testing is that the blood is taken grim central vein so they really can’t say if this affects the connection between the embryos and your uterus. Worth doing if you have the money and it’s piece of mind. Check your vitamin D levels too.

Thank you for the helpful information! I checked the examenlab web site and as far as I understand we will have to do the test in their clinical partners as we live in London. I have already checked my thyroid but have not checked my D levels, so I will definitely do it. Thank you once again xx
