I have just started my first short IVF protocol (I am on day 8 of stims!) my reason for IVF is not fertility but because I have a genetic condition I am trying to eradicate!
My scan on Wednesday showed 28 follicles ranging from 9- 16mm and we are planning egg collection for Monday / Tuesday next week depending on how my follicles have grown!
I feel like I’m playing a massive numbers game! What % normally fertilise? Then what will make it to day 5 and then what will pass the PGD testing! Feel like the egg count soon diminishes and I could end up with nothing to transfer!
Any stories or advice you can offer would be much appreciated- this is all so new to me and not much posted about PGD
thanks xx

Hello Walton, my own experience from 1st IVF, I had 5 eggs extracted, 2 cannot be used due to poor quality, 3 were incubated, and only 1 was fertilized and made it to Day 5 blastocyte. Unfortunately, it failed to implant. For my second round, I had 6 eggs extracted, 3 were incubated, 2 were fertilized out of which one had double penetration from the sperms and had to be discarded and only one survived which made it to Day 5 blastocyte. Again it failed to implant. Before I started the journey, I have no idea how the numbers diminish with each step. So you are right it is a number game. But you have a good start with 28 follicles! Plenty of reserves, I wish you all the best!
I had ICSI on a short protocol in March and waiting for my FET. We had 20 eggs extracted, and ended up with 9 blastocysts that were Frozen on day 5 & 6 - so 28 follicles sounds like a very good chance! Xx
