First IVF round BFN, high progesterone to blame?

Hi everyone,

So I’m currently 8DP5DT & it’s a BFN from me 😞. I’ve tested negative on several tests & today have started my period.

Obviously I’m totally gutted as I thought this would finally be our time. I took all the right supplements, ate really well & had acupuncture etc. Which obviously helped as all our 11 fertilised eggs made it to day 5 (just some not good enough to survive defrosting).

My progesterone is always haywire so I paid for a blood test the day before transfer & it came back at over 400! I’ve read the normal is 50-100. No one in the clinic seemed to bat an eyelid & we went ahead with the transfer, using our best embryo!

Since transfer I’ve read that high progesterone levels can affect implantation. Now I’m worried we’ve wasted our best embryo 😞.

Has anyone else had issues with high progesterone?

Wishing you all BFP’s & love

I’ve not had ivf but have read a lot about progesterone what I read is you don’t know what rate it’s going to be from one second to the next you’ve said it was 400 but it could have been fine on transfer so please don’t blame yourself or even waste your money testing progesterone unless they tell you to do so.hope you can have a bit of relax and chill and I’m so sorry it was negative hope it’s better next time for you xx

So sorry to hear about your negative, it is so heartbreaking.

What progesterone were you on?

I've read that your body only absorbs what it needs in terms of progesterone.

Unfortunately we have to trust the experts, if they weren't worried then I'm sure it would have been ok. It maybe worth speaking to them at your clinic though xx

Hey Chloe, I’m sorry to hear this.

We’re you supplementing with extra progesterone ? (Pessaries, Jabs etc?) and if so, from which day prior to transfer did you start ?

You may benefit from an ERA test. You have to do it on a cycle where you are receiving no treatment, they take a sample of your uterine lining and determine on which day you should transfer and whether, for example, you should have ‘one less’ or ‘one more’ day of progesterone. I’m not a doctor but in your case it might be that your transfer should be a day or two earlier for example.

How many embryos do you have left in the freezer ?

I know it’s heartbreaking but don’t beat yourself up about it, the unfortunate fact is that there is a little bit of luck with all of this and only 30-35% IVF rounds work.

You can increase this % to about 60-65% if you opt for PGS testing but that does come at an extra cost. This give you the reassurance that they are only putting viable embryos back in and you then have more chance of pregnancy and less chance of mc. It’s a personal choice but for me that’s what I did because I’m in my late thirties and it took me 5 rounds to get the eggs in the first place (due to low ovarian reserve) and so I just wanted to only put viable ones back in after such a long journey to that point already.

I was on lutigest 300mg a day spread over 3 pessaries, started them the day after egg collection.

We have 6 Frosties & I imagine we will go straight back in with a FET once we can.

I’ve read lots about the ERA test, sounds brilliant but we just can’t afford it at the moment. Although definitely something to consider for the future.

Thank you for the advice ❤️ And good luck to you xx

Hi love really sorry to hear that you got a bfn. Absolutely gutting. You can do everything right and it still not work out. It's so unfair. I didn't know progesterone being too high could impact implantation, but if you're worried about it definitely talk to your clinic. I get anxious and have a lot of questions and I find the clinic is really helpful is talking me through them. (obviously I use this forum and the internet to give me the courage to ask them though!) Thinking of you. xxxx
