Still spotting

Sorry ladies this is might be a bit graphic. Every day I'm getting dark brown, almost black stringy discharge. It does seem to be worse after using cyclogest pessaries. Thinking of trying them in the back door instead, will they still absorb ok? Should I check with the clinic first? St least then I'll know if the brown stuff is being caused by pessaries or not. Any advice?

I would do that too, my clinic suggested it previously for the reason you have said as then you can hopefully put it down to that and have some reassurance that’s what it is x

When I asked I was told by my clinic that it didn’t make any difference which way you too them they absorb just the same. I have to say back door is so much better in my opinion. It’s feels a bit odd at first but once it’s in that’s it. No discharge and you can’t feel it at all, brilliant! I’ve heard you can get a bit of irritation using them vaginally for a long period of time.

Id always still ask because all clinics are different and obviously I’m not pregnant but I reckon you will prefer back if you change.

It’s it wonderful the stuff we have to do as women 😂

Hi hun, the pessaries can cause spotting as they can irritate the cervix. I changed and used mine rectally found it better once I get used to it xx

Thanks ladies, think I'll try swapping to the back until Monday and then call the clinic just to check it's ok. Really hope the spotting is just that and nothing more x

Hi Kitcat, I am in the exact same boat. Been spotting pretty much since OTD (nearly 3 weeks ago) been pinky, some times brown, occasionally red. I’ve been using cyclogest pessaries in the front but also thinking I might try the back door in the hope it stops the spotting. Fingers crossed! Let me know how you get on. Wishing you all the best.

Xx

Are you feeling any irritation at all? I'm really starting to get sore now so hopefully those pesky pessaries are the source of it all. It's so worrying because it's constant, every day. Otherwise, how are you feeling? We must be around the same stage, I'm 7w+1 today x

KTL80 profile image
KTL80 in reply toKitcat12

I don’t feel much irritation, kind of wish I did then I would know the spotting was down to the pessaries. I am 7+1 although a scan on Tuesday showed the little embie to be measuring about 6 days behind so got another scan booked for Tuesday. Hoping it’s caught up, or at least showed some good progress. 🤞

I feel ok apart from some nightly cramping, and I frequent mild nausea. How are you feeling? I get so frustrated that we can’t just enjoy these early days/weeks and instead feel like we’re living on egg shells.

Xx

It's so nerve wracking! I feel constantly on edge and like something is bound to go wrong. I was feeling really really sick up until 2 days ago and I've now started to feel a little better. Although still slightly nauseous. I have everything crossed for good news for you on Tuesday! x

KTL80 profile image
KTL80 in reply toKitcat12

I feel exactly the same. I’m constantly on knicker watch, convinced it’s all going to be over and I’m just playing for time. Even if I get through the next few weeks I’m not sure the anxiety will ever end (lost a baby girl at 23 weeks last year).

Gosh this journey is hard! We really are warriors!

That's so sad, I'm so sorry for your loss. I think you're right, it's just a never ending roller coaster of worry, I don't think I'll ever fully relax and enjoy it, which is a shame x

I switched to the back door following my bleeds as advised by the clinic and it did calm it down x

I know everyone and each clinic is different but I stopped pressaries the day after my OTD and my clinic didn't want me to continue at all they said there was no need as the body naturally takes over. Did you ask them why they still want you to continue for now? xx

Niki_B profile image
Niki_B in reply toKiedy84

Your suppose to take progesterone up until at least 10 weeks sometimes 12. Yes your body produces it but not enough until the placenta takes over around 10 weeks. Progesterone is vital to maintain a pregnancy.

Hi, I saw lots of posts about this on herr so I specifically asked them about it and they were absolutely sure about it. They are one of the best NHS clinics in the country so I didn't have any reason not to believe them.

I have recently asked again (in the context of traveling on a plane as my sister was given progesterone tablets 'just in case' for her travels by her doctor in Poland) but there were adement that this is not needed.

I do know another lady from this forum who attended the same clinic as me and she also stopped her pressaries a day after OTD.

But like I said clinics have different policies, for example mine only does 5 day transfers xx

Kiedy84 profile image
Kiedy84 in reply toKiedy84

Maybe DianeArnold may be able to advise as to why different clinics have different approaches to this? Xx

Niki_B profile image
Niki_B in reply toKiedy84

I understand every clinic have different policies for OTD, transfers etc but this is a bit different. In the early days it is vital to have added progesterone...our cycles and bodies are all stuffed up from all the meds etc we have had to take, it's not like a normal pregnancy where its all happens naturally. I have never heard of stopping right after OTD dont think any of these ladies have. But if they are the best in the country and you trust them then it's all good I guess 🙂 xx

Actually I’m asking my clinic the same thing. Putting all women in the same category can be harmful. I produce progesterone, that’s not an issue, so why add another issue into the mix that causes irritation, spotting, cramping that doesn’t need to be there. I think a clinic that doesn’t take a women’s independent needs into account is unheard of! You are correct in saying it’s vital, but not if the woman already makes it. I’ve spent the last three sleepless weeks researching it with real studies sent out to me. It’s amazing how no one else questions clinics with this one size fits all approach.

Kiedy84 profile image
Kiedy84 in reply toVegemite

Hi, I am like you I usually question everything 🙈 I have also done some research and there is no one answer re progesterone support. I was really scared when I took my last pressary because that was the moment when my body had to take over and that was a big thing for me. I am not missing taking pressaries tbh 😜

Hope everything goes well for you hun xx

I used them in the back door the whole time since I experienced spotting the other way when I was using it to help me get pregnant. It’s weird at first as some of the other ladies said, but overall it was super easy and I liked not having to deal with the discharge. Just be gentle and careful with your placement so as not to irritate the skin.

You definitely want to continue taking them through at least 10 weeks. I did for 13 for good measure since I knew I had a progesterone deficiency.

I really hope everything calms down and you have a smooth rest of your pregnancy. Xx

I’ve to use my rectum when I start them I hope that it’s just the pessaries causing this hunny good luck xx

Well I did last nights pessary in the back and have woken up this morning with the same brown spotting 😞 I'll give it a few days to see if it stops but maybe it's not related.

Oh lovely. Maybe give it a chance to settle. Hoping all is well and this is old blood making it's way out 🤞

Thinking of you x x x

Thank you! I've had no cramping or fresh red blood, so I'm trying to focus on those good points. But I've also stopped feeling nauseous all the time and my appetite has returned so I still feel like it could go either way. It's a very strange, anxious and worrying business isn't it?!

Drives profile image
Drives in reply toKitcat12

It really is. You're definitely doing the right thing. Like you say there isn't fresh blood or cramping 🤞

I've woken this morning feeling less nauseous and sick too. I've been feeling so poorly 🤢 I'm wearing antisickness bands now though and refuse to take them off so hoping it's because of those 🤷🏼‍♀️ when does the worrying stop?!? x x

Kitcat12 profile image
Kitcat12 in reply toDrives

I was feeling so sick all day up until 2/3 days ago and off all foods, I had lost 7lbs! But now, my appetite certainly seems to be back and I'm not really feeling sick at all. It's a constant worry! I have my viability scan with the clinic on Wednesday so not too long to wait to make sure all is as it should be x

I have mine tomorrow and starting to feel a bit nervous about it x x x

I had a bleed at 6week whilst using the pesseries in the front. I changed to the back door and I had no bleeding after that. Was told it was irrigation. Fingers crossed everything okay x

Leanne1402 profile image
Leanne1402

Also after my scan I was told to reduce the pesseries to one a day 4 days then stop.

Kitcat12 profile image
Kitcat12 in reply toLeanne1402

I'm hoping they will let me reduce after my scan on Wednesday. I'm taking 3 cyclogest and a whopping 10 Progynova a day, it's exhausting!

Leanne1402 profile image
Leanne1402 in reply toKitcat12

Waw I was only on 2 cyclogest a day

Vegemite profile image
Vegemite in reply toKitcat12

Whatttt??? 10 Progynova! Oh darling so sorry. I’m only on 3 a day and it’s making me so sick. Nausea. No appetite. Bloating. Depression. I need to ask the doctor to take me off them. More harm than good at the moment.

Kitcat12 profile image

Think I'm going to have to rule out the pessaries as the source of my spotting. Been doing them rectally and the spotting has got worse. It's still brown but I'm sure it can't be normal to have brown bleeding every single day?!

Sorry to hear that you're going through this, but spotting in early pregnancy is really common, apparently (pessaries or no pessaries). I had brown/black discharge - looked like old coffee grounds - for at least the first 2 months. I got a few red/pink spots, too. But everything stayed on track and I'm now 26 weeks. I know how frightening it feels; I hope it all works out for you, and that things settle down soon! Stay strong.

Kitcat12 profile image
Kitcat12 in reply toTomorrow_1

That sounds like what I'm having!! It really is frightening but hopefully it's nothing to worry about x

Heeeey.. Have the EPU mentioned a haemorrhage at all? I only say this as have one that bled all sorts of colours of red and brown from 6-13 weeks, everyday! Bleed was heavy at times but mainly old brown blood.. It’s basically where the embryo implants and causes the blood vessels to open which can then bleed intermittently.. The EPU described it as a bruise which I liked much better! It’s quite common, especially in IVF pregnancies.. Maybe see if they can scan you to see if they can find an area of bleed.. Good luck with everything xxxx

Kitcat12 profile image
Kitcat12 in reply toJenjen84

Thank you!! My last 2 scans didn't reveal any cause for the bleeding but I will certainly mention it to them tomorrow x
