What to expect on very early scan *update included*

Had some spotting and cramps plus intense lower back pain this morning, bleeding didn't last long but pain has lingered so I called the clinic and they've booked me in for a scan tomorrow but I'll only be 5+4. What can I expect to see, assuming all is normal? No heartbeat at this early stage I guess? Absolutely terrified that I'm going to miscarry again😞

You should see a heartbeat. Remember it’s very common to have bleeding in early pregnancy and have a successful outcome. Rest, stay positive and don’t worry! Thinking of you xx

I hope that's the case! I'm so scared. Would put my mind at rest to see a heartbeat but I assumed it would be too early x

When i had my ectopic I was 5 weeks and you could see the heartbeat. The nurse said “look there is the heart beat but it’s in the tube.” It was devastating.

I’m sure you will be fine. You must rest and stay positive! Xx

I'm so sorry, that must have been so sad 😞x

I had one at 6 weeks due to bleeding and I couldn’t really tell what was what. Good luck xx

That's what I assume will happen tomorrow 😞

in reply toKitcat12

We saw a heartbeat but obviously was a few days ahead of you at the time of the scan but you never know you could see one. Try not to think the worst I had awful bleeding with large clots and cramps and it was all ok. Doesn’t stop you worrying though xx

Kitcat12 in reply to

I don't think I would've been worried about a bit of spotting and cramps but because I miscarried before and this was how it started, I just immediately jumped to the worst case scenario x

in reply toKitcat12

I was the same. I had a missed miscarriage and had the medical management so when I had bleeding in the next pregnancy it felt the same xx

I’m sorry to hear you are going through this stress. I’ve had spotting, bleeds etc on and off from 5 days after transfer. I had a scan at 5+6 and they could only just make out the yolk for us. At 6+2 they could see a heart beat. At 7+2 the heart beat was still showing and we are 8 weeks tomorrow. I have had almost a week of nothing but then a little red this morning. It’s terrifying and I’m exhausted after 6 rounds of treatment to now have this. I was advised to put my feet up and come off baby aspirin. I was told that what they can see between 5-7 weeks varies. Really really hope it goes ok xxx

I'm really sorry to hear of your spotting and cramps. I had them again this time around between 5 and 10 weeks, so a few anxious trips to the EPU, but now things have settled down. At 5 weeks 4 days it's a little early to see a heartbeat. Have they measured your HCG levels? At my EPU they test before offering a scan and only offer if its over a certain threshold when there should be a yolk sac. I think if it's over 10,800 mIU/ml then you should see a heartbeat.

Hope all goes well tomorrow for you xx

Kitcat12 profile image
Kitcat12 in reply toCaroliono4

That's really helpful! On the phone the lady mentioned that they might do bloods to see what my hcg levels are like x

So happy to see your good news today. It is such a worrying time after miscarriage, when you think you are seeing the same signs starting again. Seeing a heartbeat is amazing. I hope the spotting subsides soon and you can start to enjoy your pregnancy, not easy I know! Xx

First of sorry for your previous loss. It is difficult being pregnant after a loss know from my own experience. I lost a pregnancy 13 months before conceiving again. Like you i have had spotting in this pregnancy which filled me with fear. I had mostly brown spotting between 6-14 weeks I did even have fresh blood with clots at 10 weeks. Because of my previous loss I refused an early scan did have a scan at 10 weeks. They couldnt find a reason for the spotting except it was nothing to do with my baby who is now 3 days overdue!

I can’t comment over the early scan but does seem early to be able to detect a heartbeat ( you can normally see that by 7 weeks)but hopefully they can see the sac etc & put your mind at rest. But just because your last pregnancy didn’t work out doesn’t mean this one wouldn’t. Most women that have a miscarriage will go on to have a healthy baby 🙂

I was told by several midwives ( it happened a lot) unless I was doubled over in pain with heavy bleeding like filling a pad every hour or less not to worry & that a bit of spotting is very common in early pregnancy.

Hope tomorrow goes well & gives you reassurance. Will be thinking of you xoxo

I had some bleeding around that time went for a scan they did not see anything. The doc did not see anything and asked me if I was sure I was pregnant. However when I went the following week at 6.5 they were able to see one sack with a slow heartbeat and the radiographer was concerned by the doc was not.the other sack was empty only for a baby to show up at 8 weeks I think heartbeat and all.

Lots of luck today! I was in on Friday as I had bleeding, I too had a miscarriage previous so completely panicked when I saw it! Our hosp got me straight in for a scan and you could see the sac and a little bean, no heart beat as I was just under 6 weeks. The nurse told me it can be totally normal and can be a cause of the uterus growing for the pregnancy to carry on.

I’ve everything crossed for you xx

I haven't had a scan that early, however with my pregnancy last year i should have been 7 weeks and they only measured 5w6d and there was a heartbeat. However with my current pregnancy I had a scan at 6 weeks and all we could see was the the yolk sac and gestational sac, went back a week later and could see the embryo heart fluttering away. So dont be disheartened of you dont see them this early on. Everyone is different and there are a lot of people who haven't seen the embryo at all at 6 weeks x
