Just returned from the hospital after having lower pelvic pain and some brown discharge. I’m 17 weeks and this is our 2nd try at IVF. So anxious at the pain and discharge after a long time trying to conceive midwife suggested we go to A&E to check it out.
After an exam, cervix was closed and they put it down to maybe a water infection. I asked for some reassurance the baby was ok so they agreed to scan me. During the scan we saw the heartbeat but the gynae also spotted what he thought was a haematoma behind the placenta. I’ve been advised to take time off work and rest. Has anyone had this and had a healthy pregnancy? I’m trying hard to be positive and relax and not to go mad on bed rest. Anyone who has some advice or similar experience would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance x

Hi there, I had a hematoma from 6 weeks onwards to about 24 weeks of my pregnancy. It caused spotting and at times huge gushes of blood, I also had some mild pain. I was on bed rest for most of that time and I went on to have my son via elective c- section for other reasons.
It was such a frightening and stressful time, I got through it by trying to remain positive and telling myself to get through each day at a time and not try to look too far ahead. I didn't have sex either during the pregnancy as I was just too scared!
Get plenty of rest, keep hydrated and take time off work if you have to. Ask for extra scans to monitor the hematoma so you can hopefully be reassured.
The fact that your cervix is still closed is a good sign.
I hope you manage to get through this, lots of pregnancies go full term even with bleeding.
Thanks Maggsy, your story definitely give me hope. I hope it starts to resolve itself but I am definitely going to talk to my midwife and consultant and hopefully get a few more scans and appointments to reassure me. Such a scary time. It was difficult enough to get pregnant and all through the 1st trimester I’ve been panicking. Fingers crossed.
Thank you for your help and support, it’s really helpful. Xx
