Enlighten me on how painful? Bearing in mind I'm terrified of needles and the swab on the old cervix previously has been very uncomfortable.. πŸ’‹πŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ

No worse than a smear - only because they put that contraption thing in place to allow them access. The "needle" part is then nothing more than an interesting watch on the screen. Xx

Haha brilliant 😁 What happens in the process? Annoyingly they haven't said anything about it xx

The "needle" I would assume is referring to the wobbly long thin tube thing that they transport the fertilised egg into position with? Does that make sense for what you have been told?

What part of the process would you like to know? First of all your normal monthly cycle is shut down in some way to allow control over what happens when. Then you take drugs to make as many follicles as possible grow over a period of time (depending on long or short protocol). During this time you will have scans (internal dildo scans) to check on the progress of follicles i.e. numbers, size, how well they are growing. They also check on your womb lining development.

Once they are happy that you have reached a certain size of follicle growth they will schedule you in for collection. About 36 hours before collection you will take the trigger shot. Which is the message to your follicles to release the eggs.

On the day of egg collection you will be in the hospital for the full morning and you need yourself and your partner. Sperm will also be taken that day (and you need someone to give you a lift home).

You may have some period like discomfort following egg collection. Some people have gone, others have it bad. You may also get some discharge.

That day they will tell you how many eggs have been collected although you should have a good idea of how many to expect from the follicle count.

The next day they will tell you how many have fertilised.

Then you watch and wait until usually 5 days after egg collection when you go into the hospital again for a much less intrusive and slightly weirdly very short (couple of minutes) where they put the fertilised egg back where it belongs to snuggle down.

After that, depending on the clinic and various other timing factors above, you will be asked to pee on a stick or get a blood test anywhere between 9 and 16 days later.

Oh, and at some point during the process you will start the pessaries. Which can irritate your cervix and cause red discharge which puts everyone into a panic - thankfully it mostly is simply down to cervix irritation from the pessaries.

On your otd (official test date) hopefully you can pop a picture on here of a lovely positive result.

In between times ask any questions you like. We are all here for each other.

Good luck - oh, and don't forget to relax 🀣

Xxx

Another unnecessary procedure which I just cancelled. It's something to do with killing cells that make someone have recurrent failed IVFs and recurrent miscarriages. None of which I have had πŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™€οΈXxx

I have definitely heard of NK testing. I considered it but then read an article that said that nk fluctuates and it is definitely not fully approved as yet. Agree that someone who has had recurrent issues may consider it.

Hope all goes well with the ivf xxx

P.s. glad you asked about the needle!! Xxx

Im not sure what you mean by a needle? There isnt a part of treatment that you need a needle in the cervix.xx

You're joking? I'll upload what he sent to me. If you've read my process you'll find that I'm feeling a bit like a client in a business. I've spent thousands and haven't started the process yet....xx

Ahhh Ok, Im with you now! This isnt a routine part of treatment, its an added extra for NK cell (Natural Killer) testing. I havent personally had this biopsy awake as I had biopsies under GA when I had hysteroscopy but maybe adjust your post heading to ask what sore the needle is for NK cell biospy is like?!xx

β€’ in reply toCinderella5

Ohhh, got you now... x

Cinderella5β€’ in reply toDanniJones

Oh yes, actually as this isnt routinely part of treatment I would ask if its necessary as it is an extra cost on top! This is usually only done if there have been repeated failures. I guess it depend if you are happy to put all this out up front not knowing if you need it.xx

Is that the right part? That is discussing the nk test?

No experience re this procedure but are you sure you need it? Have you had any cycles of IVF or miscarriages as often this is a test that is done a bit later after cycle failures as the evidence for NK cells is still not conclusive.

If you are self funding I would ask what they are looking for in the result and how it would change treatment and why they are not suggesting IVF trial first.

Good luck

Yes I was wondering the same thing I thought this is only done after multiple failed ivfs or miscarriages? Just be careful as I think sometimes these clinics like to spend your money on certain procedures that aren't necessary or proven.

Thanks ladies! I'm going to ring them up now! I had an unnecessary keyhole procedure done when it wasn't needed and that hit home with a whopping few thousand!! Will update on what they say!xx

This tells you about add-ons. It’s a lot of money to pay when you may not need them.

When I have spoken to a private clinic prior to my NHS cycle, the consultant even suggested that sometimes having a failed cycle can help them work out where the most help is needed. Eg not all couples will need ICSI, steroids, genetic testing.

Good luck x

Oh wow geez yes you should just be starting IVF now, not all these unnecessary tests first! These are usually done after multiple failures. Yes good girl I'd be asking them some serious questions! xxx

Wow and your only 23!! I just read your bio. Definately strange them asking you to do all this xx

DanniJonesβ€’ in reply toNiki_B

Absolutely! Cancelled with his secretary who sounded very very condescending and said she's not sure why Akande would give a procedure that's unnecessary so I said look, I'm not sure if this is his way of making money out of me but I had one unnecessary procedure last week and now another and I haven't even started the process or discussed anything about IVF!!

If you need anything else then please dont hesitate to shout, its horrible thinking that some clinics may take the P. Glad you have it cancelled, hopefully you can get on and start actual treatment sooner than later!xx

DanniJonesβ€’ in reply toNiki_B

Yeah just spoke to the hubby and he thinks that just because he doesn't attend the meetings with me, Akande is exploiting his position with me to make money. Think I may be reporting him to the HFEA πŸ€” Xxx
