Hi there clinic has checked my egg reserve which they say I have 5 in each ovary. If an egg is released every month, does that mean I’m Gona run out in like 10 months??? This feels like a stupid question but I don’t know the answer
I have 10 eggs left 😳: Hi there clinic... - Fertility Network UK
I have 10 eggs left 😳
No they’re just telling you how many follicles you have. You’re not running out just yet.
This is the number of follicles you have this month; to release a potential egg. That’s not the number you have left in your body. xx
Hi Hopeful82. They can’t see how many eggs you have in your ovaries. They will be referring to the number of follicles you have in total on both ovaries. One of these should mature enough for an egg to get into, to be released this month. The #can gives them an idea as to how much stimulation you need if having IVF . Diane
You grow follicles each month which contain an egg/eggs. Only one egg (unless twins then two eggs) will be released from the follicle upon ovulation and the follicles which don’t release a mature egg disintegrate. I had 15 on each ovary one month, six months earlier I had 12 on one and 13 on the other xx
Hi Hopeful82, I echo what other ladies said.
Before I started IVF I didn't know that the body actually releases lots of eggs every month, but usually 1 grows to full size and is the winner and the rest are just lost as they don't grow to full size. This is what happens to every woman (who has a normal cycle) every month! A lot of people think only 1 egg is released per month which is simply not what happens, lots are released and fertility drugs just give the chance for more than 1 to grow to full size in the same month.
An egg is contained in a follicle, which is what they can see in the scans. Did you have an internal scan? If so, this is what they were counting, internal follicles.
I found this really reassuring to know as I initially thought that IVF would be depleting my eggs quickly, when this is not the case, its using up eggs which would have been wasted anyway!
