After my early scan last week at the clinic, and a weird ‘finding’ that needed a second opinion... I really felt the need for a reassurance scan even though I was told everything was fine. So today I paid for a trans-abdominal scan privately at 8weeks 4days. First off, it was amazing to hear the heartbeat 💗 brought tears of joy to our eyes. And everything is measuring well and heartbeat is strong.
But then I got on google for some reason and I’m doing my head in reading studies and articles on the unknown and potential risks of multiple ultrasounds especially in early pregnancy. Seems like the warnings are on the 3D/4D scans and it’s so early I just got a 2D scan but even still... maybe there’s a reason they make us wait for 12week 😬
Dont mean to frighten anyone but it’s worth researching for yourselves. It had never occurred to me before and of course, these private scanning places are businesses looking for profit.

Please don't worry yourself with these what ifs. I know uts easier said than done. Ultrasound is safe. Things like MRI have stricter rules on scanning in the first trimester but ultrasound is safe enough. You'd have to have a whole load of very long scans at very high frequencies to cause any heat effect. X
Please don’t be concerned by this. I’m currently under the care of Tommy’s miscarriage clinic and should I ever get another bfp they have offered me weekly scans. They wouldn’t offer that if they weren’t 💯 percent safe 👌🏻 xx
I wouldn't worry aswell as all the normal nhs scan 6 12 20 weeks I also got growth scans at 28 34 37 weeks and in between this all I paid for private scans at 9weeks and a 4d one at 30weeks which was amazing and I now have a 10 week old baby girl after icsi. So I don't believe this ultrasound nonsense xx
I think ultrasounds are perfectly safe during early pregnancy. There would be no EPAU scans offered otherwise. If something is going wrong in the pregnancy its not because of ultrasounds it’s because something wasn’t right with the baby nothing else. Try not to worry because that’s not good for you or your precious cargo 😍 take it one day at a time that’s all any mum to be can do in the early weeks. I’m pleased your scan went well andwish you the best with your pregnancy xoxo
Hey! On all my official paperwork it's always been stated that ultrasounds are safe and there is no evidence to suggest that they harm the baby in anyway. Congratulations by the way. So glad you got some reassurance at the scan xx
Thanks ladies. The studies point to potential issues after birth (ie neurological) not necessarily during pregnancy. But they haven’t all really been well researched (like most things related to pregnancy). It seems that the 3D/4D scans are the ones to be cautious of especially since they haven’t been around as long.
So I am cautious about what I read but it was a good ‘exercise’ in making me question the need for more scans... at some point I know I need to let go, be less anxious and trust that what will be will be and there’s not much I can do about it... which is easier said than done and hard to accept I know!
