3 day embryo transfer or blastocyst!?

I'm soooo confused ne help would b gratefully received!

So I had the call from the scientist this morning to say that all 15 eggs have gone to the next stage. 7 are at stage 2, 5 at stage 3 and 3 at stage 4. She said about blastocyst or transferring embryos tomorrow, if I go to blastocyst it will be Saturday, however, I've got myself in a bit of a tizz now because I don't remember anything I've been told about blastocyst, is this better or does this mean my little embryos aren't much good!?

She tried to explain a bit this morning, but it just wasn't sinking in.

I don’t under stand why they have given you this option they are the specialist surely thy should know if it’s beneficial to both the egg and yourself if it’s better in after day 3 as maybe it wouldn’t make blasto stage !

If it makes it to blasto stage this is great of course but a lot don’t make it but doesn’t mean it wouldn’t work at day 3 either ! Did she offer to do day 3 transfer and then maybe take the rest to day 5 to see how they develop or wot ? X

She said she would ring back in the morning and talk more about it, as she'll c how they are in another 24hrs. I think I've just heard blastocyst and gotten in a panic, does this mean none can b frozen after if we do go to this stage?

Thanks for ur reply x

Blastocyst is an embryo that gets to day 5. It’s a good thing xx

I know how you feel I had to ring the clinic and get them to explain everything step by step. I was sick of not understanding what was going on xxx

Hi Jojo, we drove ourselves nuts agonising over those decisions. We had ET today of 2 beautiful blastocyst and in the end that was the natural decision to make.

The embryologists really do make those decisions for you. They call you every day to give you the most up to date and most accurate info as the embies develop a lot every day. And even the embryologists don't know how they'll fare from one day to the next. Neither day 3 or 5 is good or bad. Both can result in a pregnancy. Day 5 is just a bit more advanced and ready to hatch and implant - think how many days it takes for egg and sperm to meet naturally and travel down your fallopian tube into your womb..

You have a really good number of embies so that's a really good thing to have. Most people have day 5 transfers. Day 3 is usually if you only have a couple of embies developing and they don't want to take the risks of losing them in the dish as the conditions in the womb are slightly more favourable.

I think they sometimes confuse us with all these grades etc. Sounds like you have 7 that are going really strong and 5 that are doing ok.

We had 2 grade 2 and 4 grade 2/3. The 2 then upgrade to 1/2 and a third one upgraded to grade 2. And we had those 2 front runners transferred today.

Good luck and try not to worry so much. Lots of baby dust to you x

Wow, thank u so much, that makes so much more sense now, so it's better if it's 5 day blastocyst then as I've got more embryos. Can they still freeze ne if they go to the blastocyst stage?

Wishing u all the best of luck with urs keeping everything crossed for u x

Thank you :) we're so excited to have made it this far. And I was so happy that ET didn't hurt!

At day 5 the embies are a bit more advanced in their development and i believe clinics generally don't freeze them if they don't reach that stage. Or in other words yes absolutely, they can freeze them at blastocyst stage. We got incredibly hung up on the whole freezing bit. And I was absolutely crestfallen when our clinic said that they only freeze in 30% of all cases. And so far we don't have any frostie(s) yet but we have our fingers crossed for the one that was still going strong today.

But I think most clinics avoid labelling day 3 or day 5 as better or worse. So whatever day your transfer is the chances of a pregnancy don't differ as much from one or the other. Good luck! Xxx

Day 5 are so much better than day 3 and if they were at all similar they would freeze all embryos at day 3 rather than risk leaving until day 5.

Just to add they let the embies develop to day 5 blastocysts to see how they’ve developed and to select the best looking ones for transfer to maximise chances of success in the womb. If there are only 2 or 3 eggs then they usually transfer them at day 3 because the selection part of the process isn’t relevant and they’re better off getting them into the womb.

The embryologist should be advising you what’s best for the best chance of success.

Good luck with it all xx

Thank u all. Feeling less stressed about it now. Think the word blastocyst scared me as it doesn't sound a good word xx
