Hi, I’m new to this forum. I’m just starting Menopur tonight and wondered what to expect over the next week? Does everyone have a strict no alcohol rule or is a glass or two on the wkend ok? Thanks. :)

Hi Gemmy. I hope it goes well for you. I'm starting Menopur in the morning. I got a letter from my clinic telling me not to drink more than 1 unit a day whilst taking the meds. tbh Im planning on giving all alcohol a miss.

Hi, good luck to you also. I have tired the occasional drink while on Buserelin but I felt terrible so I think given it a miss is best then.

Thanks for letting me know I'm starting this tomorrow too!

My clinic says no alcohol though I know others on here have different advice from their clinics. Personally I go alcohol free when on a cycle, I can live without it for that little while and if my clinic, who have great success rates, feel the need to say no alcohol then I’m going to do it. I would say that it’s even more important for the men not to drink though, cos you want the best possible sperm sample no matter what the cause of your infertility. X

Thank you for your reply Lizzie. My man has been let of this cycle. We are having ICSI so it’s been frozen. But he supports me anyway. I’ll enjoy hangover free wkends. And as you say the treatment is more important for sure. X

Hi Gemmy, I have always avoided alcohol before and during ivf cycles, just to be on the safe side.

Hope your first Menopur injection goes ok for you. The drawing up can be a bit tricky at times. Take extra care to remove the air bubbles from the mixture before you inject. Also some days I had some stinging afterwards. On the whole though I don’t think you’re going to have any problems. Good luck 🍀🍀

Hi, I am also on the longer programme. I have been on Buserelin for 3 1/2 weeks which I continue even now i’m on Menopur. I have been getting really bad headaches. I read it’s due to the drug effecting the pituitary gland in the brain, but the nurse said to me the other day it’s from the hormone level dropping. So not quiet sure? I’ve been told I can take paracetamol and codeine safely. I only find it works if I catch it early enough. I am also feeling very run down and exhausted. Assume it’s all side effects? Hope your headaches settle down. I don’t suffer daily so hopefully you won’t either. Good luck. X

Hi Gemmy,

Menopur sounds scary but I promise you it isnt that bad.

I was on 150iu for my last cycle which was ICSI and so had to inject every evening. Don’t be scared to put the liquid back in the little tube if you have air bubbles. I found that sometimes air would be trapped and to takes a couple of goes to get it right.

Try a ice packet to help cool the area if you feel you need it but you should be fine without.

I only bled a couple of times but it was where I hit a vein (freaked me out the first time!)

As with Alcohol, as you’ll see in the replies; each clinic is different. But i’ve always been told (and felt) that when you start IVF treatment you should act pregnant. One glass isn’t the end of the world if it helps you relax and chill but it “COULD” affect your treatment. Really listen to yourself and your body and do what feels right for you.

I started taking treatment on 24/12 so had a glass of bubbly on christmas day and then nothing since.

I’ve also quit caffeine and trying to eat healthy as thats the best way to prepare you body for what lies ahead.

Really hope everything goes well for you! Xx

Hi Laura_beth,

Thank you for your reply and your advice.

I have also decided to stay off the alcohol. And even find the odd glass of alcohol free wine chills me 🤣 out and gives me a different flavour to water and feel social.

Good luck to you xx
