Hey ladies,

Have any of you been told you should take an extra 5mg of folic acid when pregnant because of going through fertility treatment?

My friend is 14 weeks pregnant and is telling me all this stuff I should do as it's what her consultant told her. I spoke to the IVF nurse though on OTD and went through what I'm taking and she said it was all fine.

Just making me doubt myself now that there could be more I could do. Hubby's told me to ignore it and listen to the advice of professionals as everyone is different which I do agree with but any advice from you all to would be much appreciated!

Hi hunny, granted I've not got this far through my journey but I've never heard this before or seen it on here which I would have thought would have popped up as an issue at some point!! Perhaps it's just her clinic that recommended this, if your fertility nurse was happy I would try not to worry too much (easier said than done 😀). I hate Folic Acid, makes me feel sick, so after taking it for years for no good reason is a bit annoying lol 😡!! X x x

I've only heard that you take 5mg if your over a certain BMI otherwise you just do the normal amount x

Your friends body may need extra. Stick to what your nurse has recommended

I agree, stick with what you were advised by the nurse 🙂 I haven't heard of that about folic acid but I guess there is some other reason why it was advised for your friend xxx

I've not heard of that - I took the normal amount. I've heard that there is evidence that too much folic acid can contribute to tongue tie in babies (not a serious condition at all and very easy to fix but can lead to breastfeeding challenges until it's resolved) so I would be wary of taking too much of it.

Hi. You need extra folic acid only if you have some other health issues. Doctor will tell you if you need more. Otherwise 400 is enough.

Ps: I take 5mg as I have epilepsy

Folic acid and vitamin D are most important during pregnancy

Hiya

I was taking 5mg up until 12 weeks this is due to type one diabetes (insulin dependent) it has to be prescribed and only women with chronic diseases, epilepsy or BMI over 30/35 will be given it don't worry what you taking is just fine xxx

Thank you, totally understand about being a nervous wreck! I'm desperate to get my early scan done, for me that's a massive hurdle to get through. Hope you manage to start enjoying your pregnancy soon and seeing your little bundle at the scan xx

Def stick to the advise our nurse gives your personally oxo

I had a test through the fertility clinic that showed I'm not good at absorbing folic acid so I went to the gp and he prescribed me the 5mg. Apparently ten percent of Caucasian women don't absorb it properly. I don't think you need to worry about it purely because of going through ivf though.
