27 were fertilised. By day 3 there were around 9 that were developing well. But today we had the call to say only 2 had made it to blastocyst and would be frozen.
After all the trauma of egg collection last week I had SO hoped we'd at least have a good batch for the freezer (doing a freeze all to let my body recover) and hopefully not have to go through all that again! Really gutted.
Now I'm worrying there's something wrong with my eggs. (It had been assumed we were struggling because of poor sperm motility.)
Does producing so many eggs reduce the quality?
Anyhow, it goes to show that high egg numbers doesn't necessarily mean lots of blastos.

Sorry to hear your disappointment. I only got one blasto in our first cycle from 10 eggs. My nurse said the other day that it can depend on the 'crop' that month. Much of it really does seem down to luck I'm afraid. Try to have faith in your two that are left and hopefully they'll become strong and healthy babies. xxx
I think this is more common than I first thought as I was the same- first round 15 eggs all doing fab at day 3 thrn only one moderate blastocyst to transfer which was a bfn thrn second round 25 eggs again doing well day 3 but only 2 good enough, 1 transferred and 1 frozen but this time my quality was higher in those two and Im currently 12 weeks pregnant! Remember it only takes 1 to get a positive ️xxx
I had a similar experience with 17 eggs, 13 fertilised, by day 3 only 2 were good and 2 were average and 9 irregular/fragmented. By day 5 i had 2 blastocysts for egg tranfer and they transferred both as they wouldn't freeze just one. I've been asking myself the exact same questions as you! Perhaps take it as a positive that they were happy to freeze both. Did they give you any indication of their grading? Xxx
Thanks Amt17. The nurse did say that if they were strong enjoy to freeze that was a good sign. I didn't ask about grading - could imagine it becoming another thing for me to obsess over so thought I'd better not! Just hoping they're fighters and will survive the thaw ok. Wishing you all the best xx
Hey Hun I had 20 eggs and 13 fertilised and we got 4 blasts ! Getting to a blast stage is really hard so don't be too disappointed! I had 2 put back and 2 in freezer and I'm pregnant with twins ! It only takes 1! Xx I've read that to get to blast it's the sperm DNA which kicks in but I'm not sure how accurate that is so we may not be the quality of the eggs ! X hope you are feeling better !
Hi hun I had 12 eggs collected 7 fertilised and was told to go in on day 5 for transfer and was told we only had 2 and they were the best quality they wanted to transfer 1 but we decided on them both and im now pregnant with non identical twins, we didnt have any to freeze.
My first cycle in 2015 i had 5 collected 4 fertilised and 2 made it to blastocyst i had 1 put back and is now my son of 14 months and the other embryo in freeze didnt implant when we went to use that
My understanding is that when you have so many eggs they can be reduced quality because of over stimulation. If you have another round with a different approach to stimulation you may have better results. That said 2 blastys is still brilliant and once you've rested off hopefully one or both of those will be your little miracle. Best of luck Llama xxx
Thank you Fredaflintstone! That's what the nurse suggested too. I'm hoping that next time (if it comes to that) they would try things differently and aim for fewer eggs.
In the meantime, hoping the little frosties will be fighters!
That's so disappointing after all you've been through. I can totally understand you being really down and guttted. Both myself and my partner felt pretty low after our 13 collected ended up as only 2 decent embryos and they wanted to transfer on D3. This was pretty similar to my first two cycles too both of which BFNs. I was sure it meant the same thing would happen but I got a BFP so you just never know. Try to stay strong and keep as much faith as you can muster in the two good ones xxx
