Random IVF Question

Hi everyone,

I'm just sat here thinking about what is ahead with my first IVF cycle (funded on the NHS). I'm just wondering, if you are lucky enough to produce more than one healthy embryo do they give you an option whether or not to transfer one or two?

Hi there at my clinic it depends on your age, the protocol is to transfer 2 over 38, assuming you don't have any health issues that mean it wouldn't be safe. Lots of luck with your first cycle x

I've just had my appointment today to go through everything and you don't get the option yourself. The nurse told me occasionally they will transfer two but that's the embryologists decision if they arent as good a quality as they hoped x

My clinic said if I really wanted to transfer two then I could but they always recommend one especially as I'm 27. They also said that the percentage of it working doesn't go up that much more with two embryos in xx

Hi. It depends on the clinic and the CCG you're in. Mine is over 35 and they'll transfer two if they think that's best. x

You'll need to check with your individual clinic as they're all different. Most clinics are trying to avoid transferring more than one as multiple births provide more of a risk to mother and baby but if you're over a certain age they're more likely to transfer two. I had two transferred at both my IVF attempts but I was 37.

I haven't started my treatment yet but was told when I first got referred that we would be able to choose whether we had one or two transferred so I'm hoping that's still the case. I assume it varies depending on the clinic. Good luck xx

Very age dependent- in my area if you're under 37 they won't let you transfer more than one on nhs.

I'm 38 and nhs funded, embryologist wanted to put one back in but I pushed for two as none of the others were good enough to freeze so I thought they might as well do two. They did as I asked.

I think it can be age and condition dependent. At 33 my consultant said they'd transfer two and when I questioned they said even if I'd been younger they'd have still transferred two to increase the odds with my poor egg quality.

A friend of mine transferred two when paying privately. But nhs never would - in the end when her nhs cycle came up it was that one that worked! x
