IVF timing question

I was wondering whether anyone could give me some info on when they suppress your cycle to prepare for ivf. My dr said it’s a preparation cycle. Do they begin this typically on a certain cycle day? Or do they just do it for a certain length of time? Why do they suppress a woman’s menstrual cycle in some cases but not others? There’s technically nothing wrong with me, we have male factor infertility. Do some hospitals do this as standard?

hi,

We had ivf and my cycle wasn’t suppressed. They didn’t even tak about it with us. They did however ask me to document my cycle lengths - start date, duration of bleed for several cycles. I was very regular, I think this was part of the reason as they could accurately predict when to start IVF meds.

Interesting. They didn’t talk to me about the option of not suppressing it. I’d love to know whether there’s a reason why they are or if it’s just how they do things. My cousin had ivf and her cycle wasn’t suppressed so that’s the only reason I found out that I was having it done a different way.

Maybe get in touch and ask them? They should be able to explain it to you. As suppressing it is a medical intervention so they should explain it to you so that you can make informed consent about your treatment.

I’ll ask at my next appointment. It’s just not until June 21st.

I noticed in your bio you have adenemyosis - usually with this and Endo they down regulate (suppress) your cycle for better results. I can imagine it’s because of this. Good luck xx

Ah okay, it must be that. I don’t think I even have adenomyosis, one dr said I definitely do. She couldn’t have been clearer and another said it’s impossible to know for sure without a hysterectomy. I guess if they suspect it that this is enough of a reason.

I had a surpressed cycle before my ivf cycle.. From what I remember I took it from 15th or 21st day of my cycle. Took the medicine for a few weeks. I had no known fertility issues either. The clinic just used to do it as standard I believe. The ivf cycle was successful for me x

Every clinic and even every doctor (not same protocols in the same clinic) so I’d just trust chosen doctor. I’m now on BCP (will be 20 days total) prior to FET (will be around mid June). They put me in pills although my period was regular before ivf (it kinda messed it up so it showed one week later than expected) because of easier planning. I’m doing natural FET (semi natural because I’ll be on letrozole and triggering ovulation). Maybe in your case they also want to make easier schedule 🤔 check with them. I didn’t have any BCP prior to ivf (I did freeze all because I wanted to do testing), we dig straight to stim injections but now I’m on pill to sync for transfer (I think that’s very time sensitive so I’m not complaining). Ask your nurse everything that is unclear and don’t compare with other people’s cycles, we are all different 😅 wish you luck 🌻
