Does anyone know the chances of fertilisation with ICSI, what are the chances of the eggs successfully becoming embryos? I get the impression that providing the egg and sperm are ok then the odds are fairly good??
Embryo Fertilisation: Does anyone know... - Fertility Network UK
Embryo Fertilisation
With icsi, sperm is directly injected into the egg this pushing for fertilisation but it doesn't always work. Several factors such as maturity or immaturity of the egg and/or sperm, the sperm quality and the environment itself. From my egg collection I had 11 eggs but only 7 fertilised and 2 were viable 5 day blasts. It's such a guessing game which nobody came say what will happen. Hope this helps & good luck to you and you wife on your journey 😊
It is a guessing game for sure. All depends on our eggs too. Out of 16 eggs, 12 were OK for fertilisation, 8 didn't make fertilisation and we have 4 embryos. Not getting excited as they may not make it to day 5. I go in on Monday for transfer so they are holding on to get them to blastocyst stage, now just the awful wait to make sure they actually develop and can be transferred. I need to do more investigations as I've heard the process can affect fertilisation success and with my results I got today I'm starting to believe it. All the best with your journey. It really is tough for us all.😢

Good luck! The very fact they are hopeful to get them to blastos should give you hope they only try with the strongest ones. Fingers and toes crossed for Monday.
Hi Bigmac 1984
I had egg collection yesterday. They got 6 eggs and after ICSI only 3 fertilised.
I am waiting and praying those 3 continue to develop so i can have my transfer on Monday as planned but im afraid getting the eggs fertilised is only 1 of a number of hurdles.
Wishing you and your partner lots and lots of luck xx
I'm in the same space as you my lovely, hoping and praying our embryos make it and transfer on Monday xxx
Aww thanks love, i am ill with worry, have never felt so stressed. Have you had any update on how yours are doing?xx
So stressful for sure. No not heard how they are doing, I did ask yesterday but she said they would know until Monday. They are calling again today to confirm my time for my transfer so will ask again. Fingers crossed for you and me!!!xx
I was told they may call me for transfer today depending on how many have survived up to today but if i dont hear anything i have to go at 11:20 on Monday! They said if I dont hear anything its Monday! Let me know how you get on. Thinking of you xx
If you look on the HFEA website you can look at success rates by clinic and it splits down into IVF or ICSI and into age brackets. Hope that helps x
Thanks all for your posts, best of luck to everyone in their next stages!
Hi ya! We ve had 2 cycles done do far but unfortunately none of them actually was successful!
First time we had 4 eggs retrieved and 4 fertilised, 3 gone to blastocyst (day 5).
Second time round it was 8 eggs but only 6 mature enough to inject. Again 4 fertilised and 3 gone to day 5.
I was 30/31 at this stages and my hubby 47/48 with low sperm count.
Hope its any help and good luck with your journey!!! X
my daughter is now 31 weeks pregnant with 1st time ICSI, good luck x
I agree with what the others have said. A lot is to do with the cause of infertility and the quality of egg and sperm, but bear in mind that even in couples where there are no issues whatsoever a proportion of embryos have abnormalities and don't implant, so if it doesn't work first time then please don't be too down heartened. For me, I had 9 mature eggs, 7 fertilised and 4 made it to 5 day blastos. I was lucky and the first one that I had implanted stuck and I'm now 31 weeks pregnant with 3 frosties in storage for if we want to try again in future.
We were told to expect 80% of eggs to be mature, 80% of those to fertilise, 90% of those to develop into embryos and 50% of those to get to blastocyst stage! However, as everyone has said it can be so different depending on how your partner responds and any issues. Good luck x
I just wanted to let you know I had icsi and out of 31 eggs 29 where mature and 26 where fertilised. 11 made it to day 6 and where all frozen 😊 xx
31 eggs, wooooooooooow
I have polycystic ovaries and was on the lowest dose of medication. Unfortunately for me they made me freeze all my eggs due to high risk ohms but I didn't get it. I had to wait 3 full cycles before I could have a fet then the first 1 failed so I was quite deflated and didn't think it would work. Had no symptoms what's so ever and even had spotting and now I'm 24 weeks with a little boy xx
Icsi worked first time for us, we are now 23 weeks pregnant. Good luck to you! 😊 X
Hi, we are starting ICSI next week, we were told by our clinic Its around 45% live birth rate (im 33 he's 37). My husband has really low sperm count too under 2million. He is also really active and we thought healthy so this came as a huge shock to us.
I think the national average is about 33% live birth from ICSI for under 35 but that's why you need to choose your clinic wisely as some have better rates (check out the HFEA website) xxx
I'm the bad news story where 13 eggs done with PICSI and none fertilised; good luck in your journey 🙂🙏🏻
I've had ICSI twice so far, 3/7 eggs collected became embryos the first time and 5/8 the second time. The first time, I had two early blastos transferred and the second time, two decent embryos were transferred in at day 3. No success yet, and about to start cycle four. Nothing to freeze. During my first cycle, I had IVF and this didn't work too well with only an one embryo result. So ICSI does increase the amount of embryos you get, and it only takes one!
I do have problems with my egg quality and low egg reserve.
We also had an endometrial scratch, embryo glue and EEVA which assists with catching. Might be worth looking into these extra procedures.
Take care of each other and good luck x
Thanks for ur messages and the info, we are just starting out on the journey, fingers crossed we will have usable sperm, so far we only know that my count is below 1 million, I am going back for more detailed SA tests in a few weeks, provided we have some then we will be able to start ICSI after that.
I have my first consultation on Monday ready to start this so this post has been very helpful! I'm feeling hopeful but anxious as I start this journey- think if it wasn't for having ofsted in work this week I'd be a wreck by now but they seem to have make this week passed quickly!
Good luck! X
