Stopping IVF Meds. Fear is causing a lot of stress.

Hi ladies, I had my 12 week scan on Tuesday and everything looked great. Placenta was seen (albeit on the front as opposed to back). My IVF clinic told me to stop meds and on the day of scan the midwife said it was fine to stop as well.

I’m just so worried about it! On the day of transfer my progesterone was low, I just worry if my body will make enough. I have no history of recurrent miscarriage, this was my third transfer with DE. Has anyone else felt worried and what did you do?

Normal to be stressed about this ! Your placenta will now be producing progesterone - the correct amount for you Maybe you could wean yourself over a couple of days by dropping a dose and gradually stop For extra support take a look at our website fertilitynetworkuk.org UK-Wide group " Pregnancy and beyond group" This is a closed Facebook group Also has regular Zoom meetings -next one Wed 10 th Jan 8pm

Take care

Hi, I stopped my meds at 7 weeks pregnant and everything was fine, I'm now 22 weeks and 3 days pregnant so you definitely don't need to worry

Hi, my clinic said I could wean off the progesterone if it made me feel better. I was on a lot (1x lubion and 4x cyclogest a day). It feels scary but I read a lot of posts which assured me it will be OK! I'm 19 weeks now

Congratulations! It is really scary. They told me the same but said it wouldn’t clinically help in any way, so I’ve just followed their advice. Thank you for your response, it’s much appreciated xx

Yo can ask to stay on u til 16 weeks for peace of mind or to wean for a few weeks. Speak with your consultant as I think that is possible, not harmful and potentially helpful to ease anxiety. Well done and all the best xx

Thank you so much for your reassurance. I emailed my nurses again and they sent another reassuring email to say that I could continue if I wanted to but it would make no clinical difference. So I’ve decided to practice trust! Day 3 without them, hoping for the best. Lots of love xx

I was petrified! We had a fresh transfer and was told to stop after viability scan at 7 weeks. I had another week left, so carried on until I ran out as they said that was ok! They must hear that a lot I think! The anxiety of coming off them, but your placenta will now do the work!

All was well - we had a healthy little boy in 2021!

Congratulations!! 🥹🧡 it is such a rollercoaster of emotions - the anxiety never went, it just changed! But you got this! One step and milestone at a time! Wishing you all the best and hoping for a happy healthy pregnancy for you!

Ah how lovely, and congratulations to you! Thank you for replying, it’s reassuring. It certainly is a rollercoaster, my husband says I find new things to worry about every time we cross a new hurdle. I think that’s to be expected after years of IVF. Xx

Hi! I was quite worried about stopping the meds at 12 weeks and like you, had a history of low progesterone. I also had a large bleed at 5w3d. But stopping the progesterone went absolutely fine. They told me the placenta is supposed to take over hormone production by about 8 weeks so the extra 4 weeks are really just an insurance policy. I was absolutely fine after stopping the medication. In fact the nerve-wrecking period-like cramps that I had prior disappeared overnight. Good luck!

Ahh thank you for that reassuring message! Hope your pregnancy is going well. I have to admit I really do feel a bit better since stopping the meds. Less sickly, so good bonus xx lots of love xx

hello, congratulations. I was on heaps of meds. I weaned off them from 11 weeks stopped completely at 12 apart from aspirin, my little girl is asleep in my arms right now. It is a worry but honestly you’ll be fine xxx

Makes sense. 12 weeks definitely seems like the longest time for most. Thank you for your reply, lots of love xx

Hi Yellowlove, what did you decide to do? I’m 12 weeks tomorrow and all was well at a private scan I had last week but I won’t have my NHS one until I’m almost 14 weeks because of the Christmas holidays. I still have quite a lot of medication left so could keep going but I’m also sick of the pessaries. Can’t decide whether to just keep going until medication runs out or wean myself off. If you did stop, did you go cold turkey or did you reduce it gradually? Congratulations on your pregnancy! Hope all is going well.

Hello lovely. My clinic had advised me (repeatedly and had assured me multiple times) that I could stop at 12 weeks and then said to stop at 12 weeks 2 days if it reassured me. My scan was at 12+2 so I just stopped after that day and after I’d seen the placenta. To be honest, my butt was so painful and full of lumps from the injections and I was so sick of the pessaries and tablets that I just had to trust them so I went off completely cold turkey, no weaning. Everything has been absolutely fine so far, no issues whatsoever and I feel so much better than I did. What have your clinic advised? I’d go with that. Tbh I’ve heard 12 weeks is way extra than most, a lot of people come off much earlier. Good luck and congrats on your pregnancy! xx

Aw thank you! My clinic also said 12 weeks but I’m just scared! My anxiety has been through the roof and I’m terrified something will happen. Will have to trust the clinic! 🫣

I was so terrified too, but part of me was just dying to come off the meds too and I’d read nothing about anything bad happening after stopping meds upon advice of clinic. It was quite liberating just trusting them and reading all the comments here. You could wean yourself off gradually (they said I could if I wanted to) but they also told me there is no medical advantage to staying on them as the placenta will be producing exactly what baby needs and better quality. I’d go with what they tell you xx
