I’m having this weird thing where I’m having difficulties emptying my bladder, I can feel the need to go to the toilet and feeling very full and then when I go nothing would come out, or it would require some effort for it to come out after a while. I had this the 2 days before my transfer , the nurses recommended to drink plenty of water and did a test for infection which came clear , I’m now 5 weeks 2 and the issue has come back again a couple of days this week.
Has anyone experienced anything similar ? I’m only on cyclogest at the moment. Any guidance on how to improve this or what could cause it would be much appreciated.
Thanks a lot in advance, sending you loads of hope and good luck in your journey xx

Hello, congrats on your pregnancy. The worry never stops, does it! I’m now 16 weeks and do feel I can relate to the sensation you describe, to some extent. Whenever I have had it, I’ve always just made sure to drink lots of water and kept an eye on it, but thankfully it’s never lasted long or developed any further. I did order some UTI test strips from Amazon, just so I could keep check myself and provide some reassurance. I know you know this, but if it persists, or gets any worse, definitely get your GP to do a urine test and check you out. You can never be too careful and you are definitely not wasting their time! My GP was pretty rubbish for fertility stuff but is much more on it and caring with pregnancy related stuff! Hope you feel better soon! Xx
thank you for taking the time to share your experience, congratulations too , I hope everything is going well in your pregnancy xx
In my case it has gone on the same day after drinking water , but I’ve experienced it a few times and that’s what got me worried, I’ll have a look of the uti strips and ring the nurses in the fertility clinic today and see what they say x , many thanks again and best of luck in your pregnancy xx
Hi. Congratulations on your pregnancy. If this is still ongoing I would definitely seek urgent medical advice. It sounds like urinary retention. Hopefully just related to the progesterone which can cause constipation.
hi , I hope you’re well, thank you for your response, I’m definitely struggling with constipation too 😂 , it did cross my mind to think both things are related e.g. because I’m so bloated might be pressing the bladder or something, I’ll ring the nurses this morning and see what they say xx
Wishing you all the best of luck in your journey xx
once you’ve ruled out anything more serious, I’m fairly sure there was a podcast episode on this topic - it’s the « is it normal? » pregnancy podcast, sorry I can’t remember which one but there was advice on what to do to efficiently empty the bladder (rocking on the toilet etc) however definitely do check for any medical reasons first, hopefully it’s nothing 👍
hi helodie thank you for the podcast tip, I hope you’re keeping well, I’ll look for this. It’s definitely a weird thing, also because I’ve technically been 2 seconds pregnant 😂 . Hopefully it’s just hormonal like they adviced 3 weeks ago , it’s just a bit worrying that it has come back and not sure what’s causing it. many thanks again and best of luck in your journey xx
hey Hopewhite I just had a similar experience on Thursday. I am 13 weeks pregnant though…there is no serious pain but just feeling incomfortable after emptying a bladder. I called my midwife and she advised me to go to the emergency unit. Urine sample and blood sample are all clean but the consultant told me that if there is an uncomfortable feeling and I cannot empty my bladder then it does indicate uti and it is quite dangerous during pregnancy. So, I have been prescribed anitbiotics that are very mild and hopefully should be fine… I am also not sure what could cause it and I am only on cyclogest right now.
Ohh 😮 that’s useful thank you for sharing , I did go to my gp and got a clean test when they did the strip quick test and now waiting for the lab results, so no conclusive advice has been given to me yet . I’ve not had this again since last Sunday luckily.
I hope you feel better soon, it’s such an uncomfortable feeling! Make sure you drink plenty of water.
Might not be relevant to you, but I've got a tilted uterus and I found weeing much harder for the first 12 weeks or so until it moved as the baby grew. I think everything was just in a bit of an odd position for a bit.
ohhh this is interesting, they did mention my uterus is retroverted !, thank you for sharing this xx I did have my own theories given how bloated I’ve been perhaps it’s all squashed inside or something, it hasn’t happened again this week, hopefully it stays that way ! Thanks again, I hope you’re doing well in your pregnancy journey, best of luck xx
You too! And everything had moved into 'normal' place by the time I had a scan at 16 weeks. I also got a lot of twinges and cramps which disappeared about 14 weeks. Hope it all goes well x
