So my private fertility clinic have prescribed me meds till 12 weeks but the consultant there has written a letter to say that I would qualify for progesterone till 16 weeks but they won’t be prescribing it and that’s down to the obsetetrician
I’ve had no indication from the midwives when I’m meeting the obsetrtirician
They have confirmed I’ll be under consultant care because of my history of 4 miscarriages and I have some other gastro issues
but really not sure how to go about getting this extra progesterone
I’m 9w 3days already so really not long till I get to 12 weeks (hopefully fingers crossed) and will need new meds pronto
any of you had this experience and any advice? Has your GP been happy to prescribe? How did you get in with an obstetrician sooner rather than later? Any of you in a similar position to me - would be good to know when you did meet your obstetrician
Thank you for your advice!

I was in a similar situation and had to approach my GP for progesterone.
There is recent NICE guidance on doctors prescribing progesterone where women have had previous miscarriages and experienced early bleeding. See link below: midirs.org/latest-news/news...
I spoke to my GP and showed her this. She then contacted one of the obstetricians at the hospital who agreed that I could be prescribed progesterone. I didn’t end up taking it for the 16 weeks and stopped around week 13. I’m 28 weeks now and there haven’t been any issues.
great news! Sad to say I had the same issue with blood thinners so I always plan at least a week ahead and ask for prescription to be ready for when I need it. Good luck!
Hi there, I had exactly the same problem, this is a fairly new protocol so there seems to be a divide between the fertility clinics & obstetrics as to who provides it. Unfortunately I had to contact my community midwives multiple times and ask them to liaise with the fertility team to figure out who should provide it. Start asking sooner as it took weeks for me to get it sorted. Good luck.x
thanks for sharing your experience because of this I’ve been able to be proactive about it and get the script x
I think if you have a letter you can take to your GP you should be ok, my GP said there has to be a letter to 'formally hand the patient over' and I got into a terrible pickle where my clinic wouldn't send that and my GP wouldn't prescribe anything and like you I couldn't see obstetrician until 16 weeks. Mine was for blood thinners which I think is a little more complicated than progesterone prescription. In the end I had to beg the IVF clinic to do me enough to take me through to 16 weeks which they eventually did because I was essentially having a nervous breakdown about it! Good luck x
sorry to hear you had such a hard time - thanks for sharing your response you opened my eyes to how difficult this might be. Thankfully the GP prescribed.
I got a letter written by my clinic saying I needed progesterone to the dr who then arranged a prescription for me but I did have to take in a physical copy of the letter even though it was posted to them. I've got an open prescription for it now so I can request repeats when I need it.
