Additional scans for my age....

Hi everyone -I had a midwife check up, seems like the NH re giving me 20, 28 and 35 week scans due to my age.

I am not complaining as the scans are grear reassurance, but in a way it has made me nervous that at 42 late complications are common..

My pregnancy has been ok so far.

Is anyone else over 40 getting the same treatment?

Hiya, I am not over 40, but going for scans at 28, 31, 33 and 36 weeks - i know some people like them as they like to see the baby but I hate them and find them so traumatic so completely understand how you feel xx

Are these NHS or you opted for private in between NHS?

I know it is such mixed emotions - glad to see everything is ok? But the stress of before and anticipation is hard....

Was just thinking about why they offered and was getting stressed!

Hi Eb. It might just be down to hospital protocol. I'm sure your midwife would be explaining if there was a particular problem. Hope all continues as it should. Diane

Thanks Diane - Yes I might be over thinking. I feel totally fine so far in my pregnancy. Fingers crossed that continues.

Hi, I had growth scans in my previous pregnancy at 28 and 36 weeks and possibly one in between (I can't remember for sure though). I was only 38 at the time but was told it was because of my age and also it being an IVF pregnancy.

I am now almost 30 weeks pregnant with my second, again an IVF pregnancy and I am now over 40 but have not been offered them for this pregnancy. The only difference is the hospital.

I asked my midwife and she said different hospitals have different criteria. I was also offered gestational diabetes test due to my age in my last pregnancy and have been told I don't need it this time, so different hospitals really do have completely different ways of doing.

Thanks that makes sense and sounds similar to my experience. Thanks for sharing this.

Sound like my offering 28 and 36 additional scans.

I was pre-40 for my last pregnancy....

Best of luck with the rest of your pregnancy!

yes I did,

I had scans every 4 weeks until 34 weeks then every week until delivery. Made me feel reassured but made my husband worry there was something else they were worried about. I was 47 and ivf so thinking it was the combination. Hoping this reassures you xxx

Thanks - yes I was a bit scared to ask - do things usually go wrong at my age?

suppose it is no harm to have extra reassurance.

it’s just so they can ensure you are getting the best care. At my first consultant appointment (again due to my age) they made it clear they would prefer a c section early at 37 weeks and that didn’t change. If they’d had any concerns during the scans I think they would have wanted me to deliver earlier. Try not to worry xx

hi, yeah I’m 38 and my midwife said the same to me that they start the growth scans earlier and do more scans than normal. She told me it was due to the IVF and that the baby may be smaller x

ah ok - that makes sense.

I had this too, as I was 42. No additional complications due to age and a healthy baby 🙂 He was transverse which is a pain, but not age related!

in reply to IVFat40

yes I have had no complications as yet in my pregnancy. This helps me understand it is not just me thanks

Hi! I’m 40 and getting the same. Probably hospital protocol?

in reply to WaitingTee

Thanks these commentsh have helped - it does sound like it is just the hospital.

Definitely not just you, I had those additional scans too as I’m 42 and our baby was IVF conceived, thry said it’s normal if you tick 2 of their ‘additional risk’ boxes. Personally I found the additional scans a great thing, was lovely to see everything progressing and it doesn’t mean anything is expected to be wrong x

in reply to Emma672

Thanks for the reassurance. I reckon I probably would have got edgy in between scans anyway!
