Plant-based Wholefood diet

I have just been watching a series of videos online from Ocean Robbins and the Food Revolution about the research on a plant based wholefood diet.

It was quite remarkable and based on the latest research. This diet was successful in treating and preventing a variety of severe illnesses including heart disease. The diet was also suggested for weight loss and being effective at getting rid of visceral fat.

I do eat a lot of plant foods and whole grains but I still eat fish, chicken, occasional red meat and dairy ( mainly fat free natural yoghurt, skimmed milk in tea and coffee and occasional cheese).I try not to eat anything processed.

I’m wondering about trying it and wondered if anyone has any experience of following a plant based wholefood diet to treat NAFLD.

Thankyou

Corin

Hi Corin

There are a lot of approaches to a vegan diet and this one is fine. Most of us don't go full vegan but that is a personal choice. The research shows it to be a healthy strategy and is liver friendly. We support the addition of a significant amount of extra virgin olive oil as the main source of fat but it is what will work for you as we all have personal reactions to different foods.

ThanksWayne,

I think I’m going to give it a go for a few weeks and see how I get on.

I’m hoping I can lose a few pounds in weight and reduce the inflammation that is causing my arthritis.

I’m on a waiting list for a fibroscan and it doesn’t seem to be happening anytime soon so I’ll see whether my CAP score has reduced when it finally happens.

I’ll keep you posted.

Thanks for all the work you do

Wayne, which virgin olive oil is the best one and most authentic. Someone on your blog recommended one time, but I couldn't find it now. I have read that many are not pure blends and have other oils that are not good for us.

I use Apollo Olive Oil, a small grower of certified oil in Northern CA

We have been using Avocado Oil often when the taste of oilve oil is not great with a particular food. I also am wondering about toasted sesame seed oil ? It is a nice addition to homemade salad dressing is it acceptable.

I order amazing olive oil from an Italian source in Whitman, Massachutes, called Vemis olive oil. Look up Regal Marketplace in Whitman, MA, call and order. I get a 3 liter can. With shipping it is about $66. I usually order 2 at a time. John's wife goes to Italy each year to supervise the production of the Vemis Olive Oil.

I believe that the whole food, plant based diet is the healthiest one there is. That being said ,I can’t seem to give up the chicken and fish. But besides eating those, I do this diet. No dairy, no bread etc. lots of fruits and nuts and berries and all the cruciferous veggies etc. some beans etc. Not only did I lose weight, but my liver enzymes dropped to 17 and 20 within a year and my liver is back to normal size and I no longer have any fibrosis. So I will keep on keeping on with it!! Best of luck to you!!

what do you use in place of dairy and bread?

Nothing, I have never liked bread or dairy in my whole life , so that wasn’t hard for me.

You can use plant based milk like almond, oat or soy and yoghurt made with soy, coconut milk etc. I prefer almond milk on my breakfast cereal and fruit and oat milk in my coffee. I’m not keen on either in my tea though and prefer skimmed cows milk. You can eat bread as long as it has no animal fat in it and it is whole grain with no nasty additives. I tend to keep a loaf in my freezer and use it occasionally unless I bake my own in which case I eat it daily. I will find not eating cheese difficult. You can buy vegan cheese but never tried it.

Hi Shelerdog, your diet sounds very healthy and well done for lowering your liver enzymes. I have just watched a video showing the impact of eating meat on the world and the conditions animals are kept in the US. It was absolutely appalling and as I’ve no reason to think it’s probably not much better here in the UK it feels very easy to give up. I do enjoy cooking so that will help me to stick to it and enjoy it. I know it won’t be easy but if I can lose weight and improve my general health it will be worth it.

Best Wishes

Hi Corin, my husband - who had prostate cancer and type 2 diabetes, and I both tried Forks Over Knives, and anything and everything associated with them. He breezed through his 7 hour prostate surgery, was up out of bed the next day when the hospital released him, then with it his diabetes was gone. I used it when i had a mini stroke and heart disease when i had cardiologists screaming at me and slamming doors in my face...true...because I would not take the meds...because i was allergic to them and had major side effects...doing it for 5 years and last appt. all gone! Husband took meat back...and his diabetes is back! Now I'm dealing with NAFLD, still using their food plan and suggestions, have lost weight in 2.5 months since diagnosed, and will keep doing what I'm doing until I'm told, it's not working. Again, not advocating any of what I did in the past for anyone here, nor promoting anything. We went total vegan, eliminating all meat, dairy, cheese, etc. Eating grains, legumes, all veggies, all fruit, whole wheat breads, sour dough breads, popcorn without salt or butter, peanut butter....can get used to anything if your really scared and motivated. Take care, D., Canada
