Early Stage Cirrhosis Reversal - Living with Fatty...
Early Stage Cirrhosis Reversal
Well "almost certain" indicates no biopsy I think. About reversing is possible but not so common (depends on damage factor). Many cases of reversing are because of misdiagnosis (for example only fibroscan points to cirrhosis). So in fact they have never had cirrhosis in the first place.
Anyway good luck with your weight reduction. It is a key factor regarding your prognosis I think.
My story, in short, is being told I had F4 cirrhosis by a gastroligist. His decision was from a fibroscan and other blood tests. He told me to concentrate on quality of life. He also stated he had never heard of anyone reversing cirrhosis. He was also in his 30's, I was 69. My thought was, how much have you seen! I decided to have a 2nd opinion, so I had my primary refer me to a Hepatologist. He read my records and all test results. I was impressed because he read my full history, as did I. He didn't think I had cirrhosis. He also said he doesn't use the fibroscans. Too many things can give false reports. He suggested the biopsy, so that is what I did. It wasn't fun but not as bad as I thought it would be. I am glad I did. The result was Stage 1 fibrosis zone 3, no cirrhosis with mild fatty liver. I had by then lost 60 pounds. Currently, it's 75. I want to lose another 10. I was going to have some blood tests and an ultrasound every 6 months. Now, it's yearly with my first one is this April. This doctor also said that cirrhosis can reverse a stage sometimes. Fibrosis, however, might heal a couple stages depending on the damage. The important thing is to stop the process by diet and exercise. Good luck. Deb
Thanks I’ve lost weight and improved my lifestyle since I was diagnosed with NAFLD.It was an ultrasound taken just before Christmas that seems to be showing scarring but I’m going to ask for a biopsy to get a conclusive diagnosis. All the best in your journey and take care.
I agree in your case I would want the biopsy. Sometimes these scans can give you false information. Always remember you will have to watch your diet and exercise. Best of luck to you.
I recently had two fibroscans for a research study which showed non-alcoholic cirrhosis. For some other reason, I did not qualify for a study. I then had a biopsy which showed no cirrhosis. The result was Nash with fatty liver. Those fibroscans are unreliable in my opinion and caused me severe anxiety and depression.
I had the opposite occur for me I had the ultrasound that showed severe fatty liver with possible cirrhosis and doctor wanted a biopsy. So I had a fibroScan done which showed no cirrhosis and severe fatty liver which I didn’t understand because my numbers were almost a stage one but they said because of our family history it made me a three. I was told I would need to repeat scan in a year. My blood work is now perfect thanks to the Mediterranean diet and the advice I’ve received from this group.
It couldn't hurt to try and reverse it. You'll feel better all of the way around. You will feel like you tried and did your best. I am also interested in hearing from others that reverse compensated Cirrhosis.
my F4 fibrosis went to F0 in 7 months with diet, weight loss and my church members praying for me.
Did you have a biopsy? what was the f4 based on?
An ultrasound done few months ago.Strange thing is my liver showed no sign of scarring the past scan 2 years earlier just moderate fatty infaltration. And since the scan 2 years earlier I’m lighter and stopped drinking and ate better.I hope it’s just a guess and not definitive.I had a Fibroscan 4 years ago 19 kpa but I was 70 pounds heavier then and I think it was a false reading.Im due another Fibroscan in June
I did not have a biopsy. I had an ultrasound and fibroscan. My cap score was 380 and my Kpa was 15. I was told I had significant hardening and scarring . 7 months later I had lost 43 lbs and my Cap score was 202 and my Kpa was 6.4. My liver was no longer grossly enlarged; it was normal size. My blood work showed my liver enzymes were at 17 and 20; they had been in the hundreds.
That’s good going and well done.Im going to lose more weight and keep my carbs low long term and see how I go
it’s never ending-always watching those carbs. Good luck to you!!
So F4 can be reversed.I was under impression once you have scarring it’s just going to get worse.I feel so much more positive with your story and others that this can be improved.Im going to try my hardest if you have time could you give any diet tips you used to lose weight and other tips to help the liver,I’m thinking about getting milk thistle and choline
I was told I am now F0!! Yes, I do take milk thistle every day. It is a gentle yet powerful liver detoxer. Garlic is a good detoxer too. I buy the peeled garlic from Sam’s. I cook all my vegetables like this-I sautée purple onions and garlic in olive oil, then add my veggies-all sorts- all frozen- green beans, broccolli, cauliflower, carrots, Brussels sports; no water added. I like mine slightly crunchy. No sugar, no white potatoes, no white rice, no sugar. Your liver likes sweet potatoes and olive oil. I occasionally eat brown rice. I eat lots of fruit, berries, almond nuts and lean meats -chicken and fish. I eat no bread or dairy and no fried foods. No fatty meats like bacon or sausage. I eat lots of bananas, oranges, gala apples, grapefruit. I put lemon in my black ice tea. I eat no ribeyes but occasionally indulge in a piece of lean sirloin; however I do mainly stay away from red meats. I bought a book entitled “How to reverse fatty liver” by Jonathan Mizell and Susan Peters ; it has been invaluable to me. I occasionally eat oatmeal .
I forgot to add-I always try to buy organic as I do not want Round Up in my body .
