NASH pain question

Is it possible to be diagnosed with NASH a few months ago via biopsy and just today get bloodwork done and have my AST and ALT numbers be normal but still feel pain across my liver area of my abdomen? NASH is a confusing thing to deal with.

Hi Chefpat

Yes it is. The thing to understand is that your blood results indicate whether liver cells are dying at an unusual rate or not. Presumably, since your biopsy you have made changes in your life which have benefited your liver so it has calmed down but the fibrosis identified in the biopsy is still there and you don't want to assume things things are normal now. Lots of people get a cirrhosis diagnosis without ever having had high enzyme levels.

Thanks for the reply. That makes sense. Since being diagnosed I have been fairly strict with my diet and exercising more. So I was happy to see my numbers looking better but then I realized it had me feeling like what the heck, how am I still hurting. I’m trying to be able to not have my NASH be in the front of my mind all the time but it is really tough when I’m in pain all day every day. Just gotta keep my head up.

Hi

I really feel for you. I hurt all the time cos my liver is so enlarged it stretches the capsule around it which causes the pain, my consultant told me that my liver doesn't have any nerves in it but the capsule has loads hence the bigger your liver gets the more pain you will be in.. sorry, I hope I've made you feel upset, it wasn't intentional. Take care Lynne

NASH is confusing! Stay consistent with your diet and exercise. With better scores you may find pain subsides in time but don't get lax! I find it occupies a permanent head space for me because you always have to use caution and food is a frequent event in every day life. Simon and Garfunkel start the song "The Sound of silence" singing " Hello darkness my old friend, I've come to talk to you again"- I substitute Hello NASH my old friend. bahahaha!

Best wishes! Breathe deep, live fully enjoying each success and drink in beauty. The Beauty of being alive!

Hi,

Yes, when I was diagnosed with NASH stage 3 fibrosis my AST and ALT were barely elevated. After 2 months of changing my diet my enzymes were back to normal. Even though they are normal and have been for 11 months, I have developed discomfort over the liver that I did not initially have when diagnosed. So, even though my AST and ALT levels are normal now, I still have the NASH.

Just keep eating healthier! Good luck.
