I am a 71 year old female with NAFLD-NASH. I have had pain in the upper right quadrant for over a year. Had all kinds of tests and had gallbladder removed in August. Still have pain. Now the pain is all most unbearable. I was diagnosed with Diabetes Melitus Type 2, uncomplicated. Yesterday the pain was so bad I had to pull over on the side of the road because I could not handle the pain.
Any suggestions as if other people have had this pain from NAFLD-NASH?
Thank you so much.

Right upper quadrant pain is pretty common with NASH/cirrhosis and a lot of people struggle with it. Many docs tend to ignore it as a complaint on the theory that the liver doesn't have any pain nerves. That is true but the covering of the liver does. Have you seen a hepatologist for this? Primary care and even gastro docs often aren't very helpful. The pain could also be from other causes so sorting that out is important.
Regarding the liver, it swells up after eating as it responds to incoming material from the bowel. If the pain follows eating by a few hours you may want to consider smaller but more frequent meals to even out the flow of nutrients.
Not much help, I know, but you are on a train with a lot of folks with similar stress.
Thank you for the information. I did see a Hematologist and she did all kinds of tests and even felt that I had cirrhosis. I did have a liver biopsy and there was no cirrhosis. This was in June 2015. At that point the doctor told me there was no need to see me any further. I still had problems and in August 2017 they did a Hida Scan of the liver and bile duct and in October 2017 they removed my gallbladder which didn't help at all.
I do have pain every day and it even wakes me up at night a lot. I guess there really isn't much you can do except try and control what you eat.
There are a lot of things that can cause abdominal pain. Very hard to determine the cause for many. Generally speaking a diet that minimizes inflammation is your best bet to minimize the stress of many problems but no magic answers. Hope you find some relief.
Hi I was diagnosed with Nash with some fibrosis and an enlarged spleen in November 2016. I do get alot of pain , I'm seeing my consultant at end of February. I had my gall bladder out October 85!! I find my pain is worse than gall stones!! Hope you start to improve very soon. Lots of love Lynne xxxx

Hi
How are you all?
My consultant said my pain is from the capsule around my liver cos this has all the nerves in which the liver hasn't got. With lots of love and hugs Lynne xxxx
Thank you for al the replies. Sometimes I think it's just something I am going to have to live with as the doctor's don't seem to think it is such a big deal.
Sorry to hear you having this excess pain, the nash is the undetermined pain derived from a fatty liver, which I have, also fibrosis & cirrhosis but thank God no pain yet...
