Liver failure due to heart defects, need to buy time.

My grandson was born with congenial heart defects. A Fontan repair to make his half a heart work gave him 18 yrs, but the portal pressures caused scarring in his liver & he faces heart & liver transplant. How can we slow the damage? No one ever suggested diet to lower liver stress. Detox the liver? Buying time.

That is far beyond my knowledge so can't comment except in general. Portal pressure is usually a result of liver damage so it isn't clear what the actual sequence of damage was, but conceptually in all cases being as kind to the liver as possible is the best plan. That starts with limiting sugar, salt, and saturated fats. We have a lot of discussion on the website

but only a doctor can tell you if there are aspects of this approach that would be harmful for you grandson.

Wishing you as good a path as possible.
