A recent scan showed I have a non alcoholic fatty liver.

That's it, that's all I've been told.

No prognosis, no long term plan, NOTHING.

CONGRATULATIONS, YOU HAVE A FATTY LIVER AND CYSTS ON A LOBE OF YOUR LIVER, SEE YOU IN 6 MONTHS!

😡😡😡

Thanks for sharing your experience. We really need to understand what is happening to people after diagnosis, because your experience seems to be common. People need and want more proactivity and to feel like there is a plan.

Look out for a survey that we will be asking members of this community to complete soon. It will seek answers to questions such as how often people are diagnosed but not given any kind of plan. Great opportunity to have your voice heard!

I wonder @Stacie33 if anyone has conducted research into the relationship between raised liver enzymes and the onset of fatigue? It would also be interest if scientists would conduct research on a sample of fat and thin men and women. Unfortunately, until we have more information and evidence, doctors will continue to dismiss us.

I understand. It's incredibly frustrating. My advice, as I've been living with this diagnosis for over a year, is to educate yourself. I found several books about how to change your food and exercise routines. It is reversible and if nothing changes it can lead to very serious problems. So hang in there..

The exercise bit is really difficult, I do as much as I can but being physically disabled it's kinda limiting

My researsh suggests NAFLD is NOT reverseable and that lowering ALT levels does not actually improve progrnosis once diagnosed?

I understand ... Start out small..and don't beat yourself up. Every bit helps and overtime you'll find you can do more. I'm old with a bad foot.. so I found an arobics series about walking in place for a mile. I just do what I can. It's a struggle for me too!

Hi and welcome to the forum,

Unfortunately, many of us found ourselves in the same boat as you. As bkarks suggests, we need to educate ourselves. Informing ourself, equips us to ask questions, request investigations and follow-up. If possible, get a referral to a liver specialist because you‘ll probably find, as I did, that many doctors are not up to date with liver disease.

Have a look on The British Liver Trust website for simple explainations before looking for other, perhaps more complicated sources of information.

britishlivertrust.org.uk/li...

Liver disease is complex, especially if you have other illnesses which is why this forum can be very helpful, we are all at various stages of liver disease and can be resourceful with our individual experiences.

Take care!

I think the fatigue is probably down to the fact that the liver is struggling and not carrying out the many processes it does effectively enough. Clearing the system and regulating hormones and such as it should if it wasnt clogged with the fat? My gp tested me mainly for menopause and thyroid problems when i went with the fatigue(thats what my symptoms felt like/appeared to be), thats when he found the raised alt levels, also vit d insufficiency which ive read is common with liver problems and adds to the fatigue. He obviously had my liver in mind at some level though to test for it so it therefore it must be linked to fatigue as that was my main symptom? Thats my theory anyway ☺. I just wish they werent so dismissive of it as no big deal when clearly reading some stuff on here it bloody well can turn into a big deal with little to no warning no matter what you do.

Hello Nanuuk ,

I have a 25 yr old son who was diagnosed with prediabetes and fatty liver a little over a year ago.

This was caused by him being obese.

His doctor was very helpful in saying that small lifestyle changes so that he would be able to lose weight and exercise more would be the best thing to halt or reverse the progression of fatty liver and diabetes?

I think the low carb high fat diet has great potential for curbing fatty liver and type 2 diabetes. I know some liver problems are caused by medication for other diseases and are not life style based.

Trying to be careful in our choices will probably help to not make things worse for our livers? I have Ra and sjogrens and cerebral palsy so I understand how hard it can be to exercise and be healthy. I try and maintain a healthy weight so I can still move. I have been advised to go swimming twice a week because I am very out of condition. I have been doing this for just over a month after a break of 20 years plus. I am making slow progress I think?!?

I hope you find a successful way of managing your liver health.

Best wishes

Thank you I thought I was the only one that just felt like having one ultrasound scan in six months is not good enough. Luckily my doctor referred me to a gastro but that is mainly because I was having problems with dark urine and pale stools (sorry for the tmi) which is a sign of billary obstruction or something but even after waiting 3 months to see the gastro no further scan, no diagnosis, nor was there any explanation why this is still happening or a name. My ultrasound scan just saw some fat on my liver but that wouldn't cause dark urine/pale stools/pain in that area!

Any way good luck I don't doubt that someone has given you great advice already. This site helps alot!

Hi misg.

Hope this post finds you well.

I was reading through the forum and came across your list re fatty liver and dark urine pale stools etc , and tmi

Well not tmi I think your fab for stating it actually.

Well me and you both this in common I’ve had the pale stools and dark urine for 4 years and still none the wiser , I spent 2 years believe in I was about to die from pancreatic cancer as a result , that was pretty terrifying not to mention what it’s done to ones mental health !

The only reason I don’t so much think it’s that anymore is because like I say I’ve had it for 4 years and ide be dead by now ide think 🤔

So I was wondering how your doing and you ever find out what was causing yours ?

Did it resolve ?

Is it being treated ?

And of course , preying for you that you are indeed ok and well.

Please do come back to me.

Kind regards.

Hello, thank you so much for your message.

I also had the fear of pancreatic cancer or something but my condition has gotten better but I still experience pain in my right side and pale stools plus dark urine on and off.

4 years is such a long time to be going through that. Has your doctor found anything? Bile is very helpful to us including help digest fat soluble vitamins so a doctor should concerned. If not that then at least curious as to what is causing these symptoms to you?

I had a range of so many problems that never met a diagnosis apart from doctors telling me that I have anxiety which I now feel comfortable enough to call a "lazy explanation" because there is quite some evidence that there was more. Now I realise I am more prone to infection than I was before plus much more. I found out my platelet count is low via blood test but still no alarm bells with my doctors to get to the root. Almost like they are so set that anxiety is the root no matter what evidence comes through which is quite strange.

I hope you get a diagnosis or at least some support and monitoring of your condition since there is not a diagnosis yet. Please get a scan and ask your doctor for vaccines. I need to get another scan of my liver just to see how it is.

Stay safe and good luck. Wish you all the best.
