My question is this: how did I manage to lose 5stone only to put it all back on again. The thing is I never changed my diet or exercise regrime, i just went into reverse.
Back and forth: My question is this: how... - Fasting and Furious
Back and forth
While calories in/calories out isn't useful diet advice, it is still true. If you are putting on weight, then you must be eating more than you are burning.
If exercise calories and food are constant, then the only variable left is your basal metabolic rate. That can drop.
How do you feel? Cold, tired, lethargic, depressed?
thefastingmethod.com/the-bi...
Yes all of those.
That's rough.
I am no expert, but my understanding is that is what your body does when it thinks there is a famine: reduces your body temperature to save fuel, makes you lethargic so you don't move much and save more energy. Depression is probably a side effect.
I would love to refer you to your doctor, but I doubt they will know how to address it. So I turn to Professor Google, who in turn refers me back to Jason Fung.
He suggests fasting 😱
dietdoctor.com/fix-broken-m...
Honestly, I would try it. The alternatives are eating more - which we know will just make you fatter, or eating less, which is how you got into this state.
Or is it? I think S11m questions are very relevant. Our advice will be better if we know how you got here.
I don't think there are any specialists here, just people who have read a lot and experimented on ourselves. So take any advice with scepticism.
How much exercise do you do?
Have you been Intermittent Fasting?
Have you been on a Low-Carbohydrate, High-Fat (LCHF) diet?
I have lost about five and a half stone... I am now at my ideal weight and body-fat percentage - but I continue to lose weight without trying.
Hi, I don't do much exercise, my worn out knees and hips don't allow me to. I walk a quarter of a mile 3 times a week. I have been intermittent fasting the MM 800 calorie way, for 2 years now. I haven't been on a LCHF diet.
I am pleased your diet is going so well.
Ah. That's interesting. I had planned to maintain that way when I first started. It's not my plan now.
Note that Dr Fung's fasts are proper fasts with no calories at all - or something called a "fat fast" which is getting calories only from high fat foods.
I speculate that eating small amounts of low fat food has made your body think it's not in a food secure environment and thus lowered your metabolism.
What S11m has done, and I am attempting is to either be eating or not eating. I do fast, but when I break my fast I eat to satiety. I don't get up from the table hungry. I think my metabolism is fine, I walked 16km yesterday on half a cup of Greek yogurt, and felt great!
PS. I wasn't trying to gloat, just offering evidence that the approach I have taken (and that Dr Fung is prescribing) seems to have worked in my case.
Intermittant fasting (IF) and Low-Carbohydrate, High-Fat (LCHF) can help with inflammatory conditions... but I am not sure if they will rejuvenate worn-out knees!
Exercise helps in many ways, but I was disabled (a wheel-chair user) when I started on IF/LCHF - and I was able to lose a pound a week.
MM 800 is not IF - it is just calorie restriction - which most of us find is ineffective. One thing MM gets right in his current TV series is keto (very low carbohydrate).
Have you read the Newbies FAQ?:
Hi, me too, I have lost 6stone 3 times. Managed to stop the decline after putting ‘only’ 60lbs back on this time. I need it to stay off this time because I’m not getting any younger 🙂
Maybe the below link can help a little. Although I think you answered your own question “The thing is I never changed my diet or exercise regrime, i just went into reverse.” If you can find a “diet” that becomes your normal way of eating and not a diet in the weight loss sense you’re onto a winner. That way of eating let’s you choose to have the occasional, say, piece of cake. Allowing yourself something like that, and enjoying it won’t have the same effect as “I ate something bad, I may as well eat what I like today” and be back on the slippery slope.
Sorry if the above is a bit eggs, grandma, to suck, teaching 😊
No I not sucking eggs. I thought I had found a normal way of eating: lots of fish the occasional steak, beans on toast, asparagus, broccoli etc. Nothing out of the ordinary.
I am tired all the time, tired of being obese.
Have you had your thyroid function checked? I’m not saying that is your problem, I have no experience of it, just going by what you have written. The link below might be worth a look - if only to rule it out. Best Wishes.
Thank you.
