Wetting when distracted

Oh help! LB is 6 was always interested in going to loo from a early age, we’ve struggled along the way with constipation so have only ever had about 2 week solid period of no accidents, we’ve been under the dr and a specialist team but with covid no one has been able to see him and the can only call every 6 months, on the whole we can say we are on top of the constipation, but now it’s turned to weeing when distracted or doesn’t want to leave what he’s doing, he’s never been dry at night and that’s fine, but I worry so much about school and he gets cross about it even though I’m sure he knows when he needs to go! He’s such a lovely little boy and this is just so upsetting as a family because he gets so cross, I explained this all to our gp and the nurse but there advice now is just reward charts which we’ve always done and never help, we’ve no where left to turn and feels like no one wants to help us

I think the best advice that we got from our continence nurse that helped with this is an IMMEDIATE reward for behaviour that you want eg weeing/pooing in the toilet. So 5mins of screen time/story/sweet/tv but it has to be something they really want not just a sticker apparently. That has really helped us although I initially resented bribing my child to do what I felt they should just be doing!!

Know it’s been a few months but wondered how you were getting on with your son? This sounds similar to what my 4 year is going through at present. Any advice or things that worked?

Hi, we had a few excellent weeks but unfortunately out of no where it went down hill, I half think it is constipation back so have started trying the movicol again and yesterday it was a better day! However I insisted now that he be referred to the urologist which was the advice from Eric which I have to say through all this they have given the best advice and kindest ear (Along with this forum) the best advice I can give is stay calm be kind and make like it’s not a big deal whenever I lose the plot over it it definitely does not help! (But so hard not to sometimes we are only human) sorry this isn’t better advice or a cure but happy to chat x

It’s so tricky trying to pin point what can cause them to relapse! We also have issues with constipation but usually can manage with prune juice, Glad you are managing to get referred, hopefully they will have answers for you and a plan to make it better.

Ha, yeah patience and staying calm is something I need to focus on, you get a couple of weeks of mastering it then your like what happened?! Hope the referral is quick for yous x
