5yr old keeps soiling

Been told my 5yr old has constipation, he goes everyday multiple times and stools are all different types. He soils himself every time but will use the toilet for passing urine so he isn’t scared to use the toilet. He was prescribed movicol but didn’t like it at all and we couldn’t get him to take it even with masking it in different drinks, we’ve now been given lactalose and dulcolax. I’ve tried Being positive And keeping calm, we’ve tried rewards but nothing helps. I’m just really worried now he’s going into year 1 in school and children will start to notice.

If he is soiling it sounds like he is backed up, the soiling is new poo sneaking around old. You essentially need to disimpact him and encourage regular toilet sitting after every meal.

Thanks for the reply, we are in the process of flushing him out with the lactalose and the dulcolax at the moment. We’ve tried regular sitting on the toilet half the time he just screams the whole time he’s on there (even tho he goes on there for a wee all the time) I’m at my wits end (sounds horrible I know) but we’ve tried absolutely everything, he’s only just be diagnosed with constipation we’ve been under a specialist since he was 7mths we’ve changed over and this is what she’s told us is wrong so I’m hoping she’s right and he will get better

How much Laculose is he on? Arrange to speak to the school to have Care Plan in place to ensure that he is able to change if needed. There is a template on the Eric website you can use for this.

He’s on 10ml of lactalose and between 2.5ml and 5ml of dulcolax at night but we’ve been told he can go up to 20ml If needed

If you are clearing out then you will need to go up to the maximum doses as per the nice guidelines for his age.

Hello, our son has just finished year 1. Along with the medical advice could I suggest P&S waterproof pants? We got them through the ERIC website. Before we got them, he would leak through to his trousers a lot but they keep the poo and a lot of the smell in until you change them. Also, we put pads inside ( from cloth nappies). This meant that at school, he could just change the pad (we had a waterproof cloth nappy bag) and wouldn't have to negotiate taking off trousers and shoes. I used to go into school with him at the end of the day and he would go through changing with me there for moral support. It's a real challenge for him. Try the disabled loos at school.

I agree that your son probably needs disimpaction and then perhaps senna to get his bowels moving.

Don't hang everything on stopping soiling before year 1. You might not be able to do it. Make a plan for managing the soiling too. That way it doesn't feel like such a failure.

It's can be a hard road. Good luck xx

He’s always soiled his underwear we’ve been under a specialist since he was 7mths but his stools at one point after the age of 1 were always loose and never had a formed bowel movement they thought he had an allergy to something but was tested for everything, now his stools are sometimes runny sometimes formed. We changed specialist around 6mths ago and told us that he’s suffering from constipation and that’s the reason for soiling. He was given movicol but He wouldn’t take it at all. We are now in lactose and dulcolax and hopefully this will flush him out and things will start to get better. I am at my wits end with it but I know it’s not his fault I just worry about him being bullied if they can smell him at school but I will look into them waterproof pants for him.

I also have a 5 year old who will be going into year 1 at school who soils himself everyday without fail numerous times, he knows needs a poo just refuses point blank to go to the toilet would rather run straight past the toilet to the kitchen and hide and do it there, when asked he always admits he's pood just isn't fazed by it. We just have to call it an accident and take him toilet to clean up ect. We've have a few pops on the toilet when put on with his Kindle and a game to pass the time. was told by the dr it was constipation, I came on here and everyone was telling me he needed a dis impaction but the Dr felt him passage and said he doesn't need one it's because his rectum is stretched. It should be tight but it's loose, he needs to take 10ml lactulose every night and over time it should start strengthening.

Had to reply as he sounds like my boy x take the good with the bad, what's also helped us is that if he has done a poo in pants and then we sat him on toilet to clean, if it "props" Off his bum into the toilet we praise it with cheering ect to make him think he's done a good thing?

X
